Painting CF Disffuser
I bought an eBay CF diffuser for cheap because I couldn't find a regular black plastic one. I don't like the CF look and would like to paint it. Is it possible to get a good appearance painting at home? I have no issues the prep, wet sanding, etc. Just not sure what paint system to use. Having a shop do it would cost twice as much as the diffuser itself cost.
I am going for matte to satin black.

Your local paint shop should be able to mix automotive paint in a can and maybe have 2k satin clear coat in a can.
If not, prep like normal and use some spray paint from any store. I recommend using adhesion promoter. |

Could I use Sp*****x 2k satin black, or do I need a satin clear coat on too?
What happens if I wet sand and polish a satin paint? Does it stay satin or become glossy? I figure some amount of wet sanding will be necessary to get a smooth finish and to remove imperfections. |

You can use a 2K satin black, but it will not have any UV protection.
The 2k would almost be like plain spray paint, except with a hardener added. It’s a lower diffuser for the rear bumper? It probably won’t see much sun, but may still fade. You can’t sand and buff it. It will just make it glossy. It’s a diffuser though, it’s small and it will be hard to get dust on it while painting, if you do it in a garage, or outside on a day with 0 wind. If you’re worried about a uniform finish, practice on something you don’t need until you get it right. You also only have a certain time frame you can use the can once you activate the hardener. Here’s my diffuser story. Bought two 5fin diffusers for an e92, cut them up to fit my e90. Nice matte finish out of the box. Not sure how long it took, but they eventually faded to a flat finish. I just sprayed some 2K gloss clear on them and need to put them back on. |
