hey guys, I've got a 2008 328xi. There is this problem that happens every time I put gas in; the pump would give a "click" that you usually get when the tank is completely filled, except I would get that "click" continuously every few seconds.

Though the click goes away if I play around with the position of the pump nozzle and angle it differently sometimes.

Can anyone tell me the cause of this click? is it a serious problem with the tank itself?

Mine does that too, there's nothing wrong with your tank. The nozzle just isn't in the right position. Its supposed to click when your tank is full but if the nozzle isn't in the right place then it clicks b/c there is back pressure.

Try not inserting the nozzle 100% into the tank that will lessen the backpressure. Some pumps do this more than others.

don't worry about this bec it happens to my car as well. It depends on the positioning of the nozzle.

It seems to vary with the car as I had the problem on an '80's Maxima, but only rarely with 5 different BMWs. The last time it happened (on my 128i), I mentioned it to the station owner and he claimed it was because the pump filters had just been changed and the gas was flowing faster.

Happened to me last night when I was filling the tank.

If you shove the nozzle into the tank in an odd way, the backsplash from the gas will trigger the automatic cutoff mechanism built into the nozzle to prevent overflow and spillage. Gas pressure built up in the tank could sometimes cause that to happen, as well.

Make sure the nozzle is all the way in, and the handle is vertical.

This happens to me once and awhile. I fill up almost every time at the same gas station at the same pump. Once and a while the nozzel will early-shut off (all most instantly after I start it). The shutoff mechanisim is a spring loaded ball valve. I think the ball valve gets out of position if the nozzel is rough handled or something. What I do is raise the nozzel up with the pipe straight up and tap on the end of the handle body (where the pipe goes in to the handle - where the ball valve is). This resets the ball valve, and I have no issues after that (other than anyone watching thinks I'm strange).
