White Smoke after a Hard run and quick stop

Hey all I have picked up a 2007 e92 335i about 8 months ago and loved it ever since it had 73,800 kms when i bought it and it now has 102 xxx kms (yes I like to drive ) only ever put 91 and sometime 93 when avaliable. But anyways after a hard run on the highway I hit the gas was going about 135km/h and then caught the red on the off ramp and had to slow right down to 0 pretty quick and a huge cloud of smoke came out of the exhaust for good 5-10 seconds and then once I took off again it was okay gave it a few revs and everything seemed okay no smell of oil or coolant. An idea what this means any info would help.
Thanks in advance

Thanks but I already knew this I also thought coolant since it was thick white but there was no smell at all.
I did some searching could it be a turbo seal?

It depends on when it occurred. Under load could mean turbo seals. But under decel when you are in a full vacuum state it generally means head gasket.

That's too general of consensus; I mean, when was the last time you read about a HG going bad on an N54? It's not a very common issue on this platform and even if it was, there would be more obvious signs as opposed to just smoke after a pull.

PCV system is obviously the first place to start; turbos being second.

Hi thanks for the response I dont think its a headgasket as there is no oil coolant mix i can see. There is 0 oil consumption and any tips on the best way to check the PCV system and also it only happens when I have to make a sudden stop after I am at WOT and not when im a decel when I come to a complete stop the part that baffels me is that it never happens under normal driving only during a hard run then a sudden stop

well you're clearly doing something wrong then. perhaps you should avoid WOT pulls and then shitting on your brakes.

What exhaust do you have? May seem like a random question but I had the same issue, white smoke with no smell after hard pull and coming to a quick stop. No other symptoms or leaks of any kind.

After a lot of research one guy with the stock exhaust said it was from water sitting inside the exhaust. The WOT pull heats it up and thick steam comes out. Then another guy said when he cut open his stock exhaust for a PE mod a lot of water came pouring out...

You can try parking on steep hill and revving to see if anything comes out. Mine seemed to go away after a few more hard pulls and no rain. Just another thing to look into.

If you want to test the exhaust water theory you can drill a drain hole in each muffler and after draining plug the hole with a screw.

Made me chuckle...

Why you keep doing WOT near red lights and where people can cut you off? And think that they are being the asshat?

Eh, that's just a thread chronicling the chasing down of blue smoke (oil). OP in this thread has white smoke (water/coolant). Different beast. But equally frustrating to diagnose at times.

Smoke from burning oil can seem white after going through secondary cats in large amounts. Regarding the water in the exhaust, I've twice taken my exhaust completly off (during lsd install and then clutch install) and raised it up. My friend who was helping me out and owns a BMW indy shop almost pissed himself from laughing when he saw the amount of water pooring out. We are talking a solid gallon+

If you are not having to add oil or water to the engine, I would not worry about it too much.

The reality of the situation is that a small amount of oil can make a large cloud of smoke, and our oil level gauges are the next best thing to not having a method of checking the oil level. Mine can go from 100% full to add one quart in a short drive. I will drive home and the gauge it will show 100% full when I get there. Although the display looks as if it can be very accurate, I only see 3 modes, Full, middle and add 1 qt.

You likely have a problem with valve seals, PCV or a turbo, just like the many others.

Does the white smoke still smell like burning oil or does the cats mask the smell?

Exact same thing started happening to me before my turbos went bad. Smoke after hard runs and a quick stop. It got worse to the point where it would smoke under load at low speeds. Took turbos out, front one's seal was shot and it was leaking oil onto the turbine.
