I test drove a Z4 35i with DCT ... but found I think a similar thing to what you have mentioned ... it took - at times - 'ages' to decide which gear to kick down into before it actually did it.
Changing up was lightening quick but downshifts were IMO slow and the pause with this downshift and then the very slight delay before the engine went mental really spoiled the experience. I was very disappointed and had thought I would be buying the Z4. I didn't. And I was doubly surprised having owned a Golf GTi with the *similar* DSG gearbox. The engine had the power but it was all spoilt by the delay in the gearbox. |

The auto-box on the 335i in D mode will shift up very quickly, in normal day to day driving I rarely seem the rev counter go above 2K. In fact the changes are so smooth i have no idea what gear i'm in most of the time!!
If you want to rag the engine, stick it into M mode ( stick it into DS mode than select a gear ) and your have full control...trust me the 335i isn't short on power I've found I drive much more smoothly and calmly these days around town, mainly cos the auto box is so smooth and relaxing. But when i got for a blast the paddles are great, and I never miss a gear. Like others have said I don't think i want to go back to a manual if all auto boxes are as good as the one in the 335i |

Coming from the Z4 coupe auto and prior to this the 520d auto, I truly love my E92 335i auto. Have rarely pushed into the sport mode, I haven't had the need. Although now the Z4 has gone, I don't have the chavs and old men in MPVs trying to race me all the feckin' time.
I still love not having to wear shitty plastic gloves at PFSs too! |

with the 335d you are only 1 gear away from serious pulling power. Cant think of many times if any where I have overriden the D selection with 2 clicks of the paddle.
It's very hard to keep it at 1000 /1200 rpm before it changes back up knocking the revs back to 1500 & a quick flick of the paddle has you over 2k revs. Most of the time around town its hovering around 1500 revs so one flick of the wrist is all it takes. |

I'm glad I specced my 335D with a manual. Laugh at the big Sissies that have auto boxes. D.

I'm not for one minuet trying to sell the concept of DCT type boxes, but all that Cods wallop about being in control, is out dated. Arguably you're in more control with a DCT as you can shift faster and have no interruptions in drive, when shifting. But I fully agree they're not for everyone. |

Err my bargain basement Hyundai automatic I bought in 1995 had a lock-up torque converter, with a solid mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels.

When did BMW start putting manual gearboxes in the 335 diesel? Didnt even think it was an option.

Dont think there is a lower power version 335d, unless you mean the 330d which is available with manual.

Were not still in short trousers. If somebody prefers a different method than Stufo's for changing gears it has no relevance whatsoever on whether they like driving or not. I have the newer ZF automatic in my 335D, and a quick shift, bolt action 5 speeder in the RS. I like driving both. D.

Took out a TT S today for a spin!
Got to say it felt like a heck of a lot of fun, got a stupid auto box on it but i think id get a manual version... Seemed very grippy even in the wet.. far more front end grip than my E92.. Could be tempted.... very tempted... |
