D engine air filter

Hey guys. I replaced a KN engine air filter with an oem one recently and couldn't remember if the oem filter was to be put in with that crazy white foam piece still in place. It just seems wired to be there. Of all the other bmw's I've owned, I don't remember the white foam piece being attached to the air filter. Thoughts?

I believe that this acts as acoustic dampening, but it may also have something to do with the spring-loaded secondary air assembly in the box. Yes, the filter is installed with it on (it's glued on).

Excellent. Thanks for confirming this. So far this is the only BMW I have come across with this "glued" piece in place on the oem filter. Do you guys think it is restricting airflow?

I heard it was for snow. to prevent snow or something. I ripped mine off, it was very dirty.

it's simply a first level foam filter to prevent the larger pieces of sand, leaves, insects etc go into, and block the folds of the paper element. Open the airbox, most of the stuff you find lying on the bottom was kept out by the foam

Yeah, It's amazing how much of a vacuum cleaner our intakes are. I cleaned mine out 3k miles ago and opened it up last week to find it filled back up with leaves, bugs, dirt, salt, small pebbles, etc.

I know that the assembly is labelled "suction silencer/filter cartridge" but I do not believe that there is a resonator of any kind built into the assembly. Any idea what the "silencer" portion refers to if not the foam bit? It does seem odd that no petrol BMWs are equipped with this AFAIK, and i would imagine that if it were only for filtration purposes, the paired primary/secondary filtration configuration would be more common among the brand. The n/a vehicles seem to have an intake silencer built into the air duct (such as the 328, shown here: http://parts.bmwofsouthatlanta.com/s...roduct=8398318), but the 335i has the suction silencer label and no visible resonator/silencer, so perhaps it is just referring to the box. Hmmm, perplexed...

Lol. That was more of a question than an answer, but I'll take whatever s I can get.

Anybody care to chime in with an answer? Are we to assume that the channelling of the air through the box or the box composition itself is providing the dampening necessary to be deemed a "silencer"?

Man!...you Canadians get better fuel and non-enigmatic engine air filters?!...it's time to seriously consider moving north of the border (or at least vacationing there for fill-ups )

On the thread related to carbon build up/injector issues we may be able to identify if the likelihood of occurrence is higher on cars fuelled in US...
Fuel in Canada is indeed better then ours.
