Quite a few of us will be heading up towards Santa Pod drag strip this Sunday (10am). It's an open day that for £10 admission and £15, you get to run quarter miles with your car on a proper drag strip with print outs of times, speeds etc.

I'll be pitching my 335D against my mates' M3 CSL and a tuned up 330D pushing 278BHP :rocks:, also from our group there will be plenty of BMs and also a Ferrari F430.

Good to get more E90/92s there

With the 335ds it would be interesting comparing d and ds modes at the strip. I think the sprint may be quicker in the normal d position?

do you think so? when i have been driving along at a rate, i have found manual shifts to be quicker, well feel quicker anyhow..?!

how is the best way to launch off the line?

in a manual gou can just dump the clutch at whatever revs you like? what about the d or ds?

It just that cars that I've driven before with shed loads of tourque allways go quicker by short shifting. There really is no need to push the 335d to the red line as the output torque would be less than what is available in the next gear up. The torque drops off rapidly after 4500RPM so if it were me I would use that as an absolute limit. Maybe in ds mode the shift points are nearer 5000RPM, I don't know, I haven't finished running in yet.

well i have looked when accelerating hard the auto goes upto 5k which is prob why it feels slower, when i am manually upshifting i change at 4.5k

peppernick, how many runs did you get in total? my previous experiance of santa pod, (not on track BUT spectating) is that most people only got a few runs in due to how busy it was?!

when i went to shakespeare county raceway i got 10 runs in and stopped for lunch for 2 hours

Not quite as simple as that.

I new someone with a 450BHP GAA Capri who used to break half and prop shafts for a pastime trying to get off the line.

At least with the auto you haven't got to worry about the clutch exploding as well.

i know its not quite as simple as that mate:rocks: im just stating an average

i know of several 400-500bhp sierra and escort cosworths which break driveshafts diffs etc when launching hard, but this is what cosworths do best being 4wd rally machines

you can get uprated components to avoid such breakages

im also sure that when bmw test there cars 0-60 figures they dont kust pull away from idle, as this wont get the best time, i am just wondering the best way to do this in an auto

It was very busy, especially in the morning. However, it was quiter in the afternoon, and that's when the track was fastest. My 335D did 7 runs, of which 3 of them were driven by my friend.

Best time were achieved in DS mode auto, with DTC turned off. There's hardly any wheelspin as the Goodyear F1 tyres I am using bit the sugar water sprinkled strip hard. If you look at my vids, you can just about hear the tyres chirping in first and second. In D mode, run times were as slow as 15.2.

Left foot on brake pedal and right foot opening gas throttle slightly. When the lights turned green, I released the brake and floored the throttle all the way including activating the kickdown button.

I mapped the output shaft torque for my 530d and found that it was better to short shift in the upper gears
