auto transmission problem fixed

Have an auto trans 07 328xi 65k Mi. Was at church parking lot when lost my reverse then few feet away it was forward that went away too. Had car towed to Mxpi at Streamwood, illinois. I thought I was gonna need a new transmission but Cid (owner) was able to diagnose the problem which needed a simple replacement (forgot the part). Had it flushed too. Only spent $1k total. Had I brought it to aamco or any other shop, for sure they would have gone the easy fix or shipping transmission for rebuild which easily would have cost $3-4k. It's now working great. Wife still wants to trade in for new IS350 Fsport for some toyota reliability.

was it due to lack of fluid or abuse or just failure?

They just break and do not engage reverse. Also there is a sealing block that goes between the valve body and transmission thay can crack which causes a leak in pressure build up and will not engage the reverse drum inside the transmission at times.

It broke and I was told it was "dislodged" that's why it also wouldn't move forward.

Probably just one of these things.

$1k is pretty steep for replacing just one of these things though...
