Shell RON 99 (V Power)

Guys,

My local garage was recently refurbished but in doing so they have changed the octane level of their V Power fuel to 99 RON. I note the 335i recommends 95-98 RON. Will using 99 resullt in any issues or more importantly cause any damage to the engine?

I have resorted to using Tesco Super Unleaded RON 97 in the mean time but it is 15 miles away from where I live.

Thanks in anicipation.

Have a read of this evolve fuel test 335i

V Power works very well in the 335i. Using a higher octane rating is not harmful.

99 RON will do you absolute no harm, in fact I hunt it down.

I know a racing outfit who between the 4 or 5 fuel giants carried out an independent test under strict conditions using an E46 M3 and there was a 30 BHP difference between the worst & best performer. The fuel grades tested where either 97 or 99 RON.

The Shell V came a very, very close second......guess who came first?

AFAIK V power has been 99 ron for at least 2 or 3 years and Tesco Super is 99 ron too?

They probably just changed to pump handle labels to the new ones that state "99 ron" on them.

As said more rons the better.

I'm sure my fuel flap label says up to 100ron on it?

That's VERY interesting! I'm surprised there is that much difference to be honest! I'm guessing the so-called performance diesel fuels wouldn't make that sort of difference tho?

Have you not tried the premium fuels? I use BP Ultimate in my 330d and definitely a smoother experience, with more bite when accelerating. Mpg improvements pay for the difference. Even if there were no mpg gain, I'd use a premium fuel for the more refined feel and cleaner running in the engine.

I had to fill with standard BP last time (no Ultimate) and I feel the difference. Best to use regularly, if you are going to use a premium fuel and get the best from them. Remember these fuels are designed along side the engine makers.

I've been running my 535d exclusively on V-Power diesel, but had to put some normal Esso diesel in on Sunday.

This week it felt crap. The light to mid throttle response was poorer and it felt like it had less midrange torque. The gearbox seems to have adapted to the V-Power too as it was changing down and spinning the engine up far too readily on the regular diesel rather than holding a higher gear or even changing up when giving it a bootfull. Hard to say if there was any difference in full throttle grunt but it certainly came less progressively.

Luckily I've done two 320 mile trips this week and was able to put some V-Power back in it again. All back to 'normal' again.
