how common is for valve seal on e92 n54 to go out
my car has been smoking every time i come to a stop light or a stop sign and its getting annoying i check my oil and it was missing a QT so i add and a week later its missing Qt again and it wont stop smoking i talked to a few people and they said it could be valve seals but i was Reading it could be the oil breather/separator from the crankcase any ideas?

Mileage, leakdown, the next place to look would be turbos. When the CHRA's start to go they can leak a ton of oil through the seals.
It's not good either way.

Turbos, I had the same problem.. Drop your downpipes and check for oil before you go digging your motor apart thinking it's valve seals..

The decision to rebuild/replace is going to be dependent upon who is doing the work. If you are removing the turbos and rebuilding them yourself, you could do it fairly reasonably. If you're paying for someone else to do the work, you may be better off investing in upgraded turbos, seeing that the $1000/labor is going to be about the same either way. I'd feel better about spending a grand to have turbos installed if I knew I was getting better/upgraded turbos. |

Center Housing Rotating Assembly
The guts of the turbo. Most CHRA's are about 1/2 the cost of new turbos. Simply replacing them essentially gets you a brand new Turbo. It's also rarely necessary to replace the housings, and it's a great excuse to disassemble and coat the hot side with a high temp ceramic coating, which improves spool and reduced under hood temps significantly. Here's a pic of an old CHRA I replaced years ago (ignore the motor mount):
