e90 sub not much comming thru to cabin? Recommendation needed.

Ok, so yesterday I had my aftermarket JVC HU fitted and a Jl audio amp. I was going to have a basslink t fitted but it was to big to be fitted.

Anyway the installers put in a 12" jl audio sub in to demonstrate it for me. It was running from my amp which was also powering the front speakers.

There was not much bass comming thru into the cabin at all.

Would it of made much difference if the sub had a dedicated amp running it?
I mainly listen to hip hop and love hard hitting bass.

Would love to know how other e90 guys got round this problem.

Do you have ski pass? If so open that up.

Otherwise you'll need to make an opening in your rear parcel shelf or back seat where the ski pass goes.

Or you can go with a louder setup? I wouldn't try 8"s under the seats...they won't hit ad low as you want.

Opening up the rear shelf did absolutely nothing for me surprisingly. Going bigger didn't help much and just made more rattles. What I've done is put my sub in the backseat although this isn't a permanent solution it works for now. That made a huge difference I went from 2 Type R's in the trunk on 1400 watts to 1 in the backseat on 650 and it's louder now.

Not sure what you guys are trying to do. We put subs in and they work fine. Remember that the perception of bass depends both on the sub-bass - what can come from a subwoofer - and mid-bass, 50 cycles and up, which is harder to get out of a trunk of a well-made car, but which ought to be coming out of the underseat woofers in a well-setup system in our cars.

So if your shop is putting bass in the trunk and new door speakers, and doing nothing underseat, of COURSE there's a huge hole in your sound - especially with all those EU base Stereo systems with no amp and 6" mids under the seat in the 8" locations.

One reason we start underseat rather than in the trunk.

Which direction was the sub firing? How much power did it have going to it?

If you have a rear-firing sub in a sealed trunk with 250rms, what exactly do you expect?

Build a proper box and fire it through the ski hole. Click the link in my sig for an ideas...

Unfortunately I do not have a ski pass and do not really want to go down the road of cutting things thru if i can help it. I only had a HU and amp installed not the door speakers, that will be my next plan of action, im thinking of hertz 3 way components. The amp is only a 300w amp and was running the sub as well as the front speakers, so granted not much power was getting to the sub which was rear facing. So with a more powerful amp just running the sub in a sealed boot/trunk and with the hertz 3 ways, I should get the bass im looking for?

Hertz doesn't make flat 8" any longer that fit under there. Their three-way kit has a 165mm midbass (6.5" to us Yanks).

I think you would be better with a flat 8" under there. Can you get Earthquake SWS-8?

Lot of info on what many people have done for good sound in that car. Not impossible by any means...

So the sub was only getting 150w? Well that's your problem...

Properly power it and see if you get what you want. If not, come back...

Audio System makes a decent 3-way set, and it is drop-in. It seems to be the most common front speaker replacement choice in Europe. IIRC, the Hertz midrange is crossed over too high, so you would have voices coming from under your ass (or is it "arse" ) which would not be good.

http://www.autohifi.org/shop/audio-s...n-pi-6159.html

Or the more expensive solution from Exact, which uses a smaller woofer:

Had a listen to the hertz 2 way and I really was impressed. The 3 ways have got really good reviews and in my budget so I think I will go for them.
They come with the CX 300 crossover which you use to adjust the speakers individually.

Also heard a 12" hertz sub instore, again sounded awsome.

A couple of people have suggested removing the rear speakers to act as a vent for the sub.
What you guys think?

It wouldn't help since the bottom of the speakers are covered in the trunk take a look if you don't get what I'm saying.

Make it easy on yourself! Just upgrade the front speakers, put in a shallow 8" under the seats, install a corner loaded 10" in the trunk and power everything properly and you'd have a kicking system that takes up little space. What I have, just for reference:
Morel hybrid ovations fronts
Renaissance WR-8 8" under the seats
stock speakers in the rear deck
Soundsplinter Rli-10
DIY driver side fiberglass box
Zapco, 650.6, 200.2, and 500.1
With Technic's harness

Everyone that has listened to my system has been blown away! Both with the sound quality and amount of bass from a single 10". Moth thing there's 12"s in the back.

What he's done has been done by many folks - we do it all the time - do not need a ski pass.

I didn't before the install. I did cut one in so I could load longer objects in the trunk but it didn't make a difference for sound.

I find that with my ski pass closed, the bass sounds like it's coming from my trunk. With it open, bass sounds more central.

Output doesn't really change much but it does sound louder with the ski pass open AND the windows open as well.

Like I said before....I am pretty sure the mid/low crossover on the 3-way set is pretty high (400 - 500 Hz) which is less than ideal for our cars. I'm sure it is a nice component set, and would probably work well if the mid-bass was mounted in the doors, but you probably end up regretting putting it in an e9x.

What do you think then of the Focal 165 A3 Access, the crossover point is 300hz?

You want the x-over to be no higher than 200Hz, ideally 100Hz. I'm not aware of any 3-way that would have the x-over that low. Anyway, a 6.5" under the seat is less than ideal anyway, so the best thing to do is get a 2-way component set plus some 8" woofers under the seats. Obviously this would require more amplification ( 4 channels) but it is the best way to go in our cars. Look at this thread for speakers that will fit: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=343673

That way would be out of my budget.
This member on the link below has the focals fitted, and is considering taking his sub out of the boot/trunk and relying on his underseat subs.
