Most diesel at the pumps contains upto 8% biodiesel.

I have never used any supermarket fuel, I've heard too many nightmare stories about the quality of it and its normally only 2 to 3p cheaper than the "normal" filling stations here so I have never thought that it is worth the risk.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you can fill up at a premium brand station then I'd advise it for various reasons but you aren't going to kill your engine using Tesco fuel.

I have done several hundred thousand miles on the cheapest shit diesel I can get.
Never one single issue on any car.

Diesels are a blunt instrument, you can put anything in them (within reason).

I seem to think the BMW book refers to Biodiesel, and not just the normal small percentage additive.
Can you quote the exact para as I dont have my handbook here?

On the filler cap of my 2011, 325d, it says 'No Biodiesel'.
But there is also a diesel grade number (EN590, I think), followed by B7.
The B7 relates to a maximum blend of 7% biodiesel.

Which seems to be what supermarkets are using. It was at Morrisons, anyway.....

The fuel all comes from the same place with a small number of refineries serving all manner of petrol stations. Go where you want of course but it really makes no difference.

Biofuel isn't something we should need to worry about with the levels permitted to be mixed in with normal fuel increasing in years to come. IIRC the main problem is for cars pre 2000'ish due to the seals in the fuel system not being up to the job.

I had a few tankfulls of tesco diesel during that petrol crisis in March because the shell i used was out of stock for a while. Whilst using Tesco diesel I did not notice a drop in mpg (same as when on shell) but when I started my car in the morning it did sound a lot noiser under the hood. Also I found the car to be hesitant on junctions when pulling out, when I pressed down on the accelerator there was a split section of power being delivered (I dont know how to explain it)

Then I moved onto normal BP diesel (could not find ultimate diesel out fo the 5 stations near me) which returned the car back to smoother noise level. However i did notice my MPG went up by 1-2 mpg or so on same journey.

I dont know why I then went back to shell fuel save and noticed 2mpg drop over the same journey to work.

I have just filled up at Texaco and will report back

BP add there own choice of additives. As do Shell, Esso, Total, Jet, Tesco, Morrisons etc etc

The theory is (in basic terms) that the supermarkets add less than the others (or a lower quality) and the likes of BP and Shell and more/better additives.

Have you not considered that the way you drive affects the mpg?!

It is impossible to drive under exact same circumstances from one tank to the next!!

maybe so^^^ my driving will not be the same 100% on the same journey 5 days a week so may have affected my mpg in increase/decrease. But one thing for certain each morning when I started the car up since moving away from supermarket fuel is the engine is a lot smoother and quieter

+1.
On my previous diesel car, I always used to get max MPG out of BP fuel compared to Shell.
My findings were, car was more responsive on Shell Fuel, but more MPG on BP Fuel. The only reason I have in my mind, when car is more responsive on Shell fuel, you automatically enjoy accelerations, and accelerate car frequently leading to possibly relative poor mpg on Shell fuel compared to BP.

Is that on just standard or v-power diesel?
