OBC Acuracy ?!

How acurate is the MPG on the on board computer ...

i only ask because since i finished the running in period (which was 7k ago) my 335D hasnt shifted from 34.8mpg?!! ... and i drive in all kinds of ways on a variety of roads. For example i can go out for a quick 'tyre unfreindly thrash' using the paddles and also do 100 miles of motorway and still no shift from 34.8 ... are these things acurate ?

thanks

I've worked out the real fuel consumption against the OBC on my 320d and I'd say the OBC was 2/3 mpg more than the real, this is based on a tankfull and 640 miles covered.

OBC

Mine is optimistic by 2 to 3 mpg also, where as the E46 was spot on.

Mine worked out 2 mpg too optomistic when I calculated it manually. That was only based on 1 tank and I guess it'd need a few more to make it a totally fair comparison. For 2 mpg I can't really be arsed!

My biggest concern is that I'm only getting 37 mpg (mixed driving) which is nowhere near BMW's figures. However, I guess their tests were on nice flat roads, not the hills around Halifax, and its still a lot better than I was getting from my ST170!

PS - I know what OBC stands for, but on the stalk its BIC (I think), what's that mean?

Tell me about it! I used the excellent economy to sell the car to the wife (she wanted something cheaper and boring). I'm trying to keep the actual figure away from her.

On the motorway I'm getting 46 to 53 (depending on which way I go on the M62) at 80 mph, but the urban and combined figures are nowhere near. Hopefully things will improve as the car gets older (only 3k on it at the moment).

Funny enough mine got worse after 4k, but I put that down to me driving harder now it's run in and I don't look at the "when to change gear indicator" so much now.

CD, have you ever cleared your average fuel consumption. If you haven't, the car is giving you the average since day one so therefore, restrained drivign or a thrash will not affect it.

You can pick computer on the radio, select average mileage and reset it which will give you a clearer idea of your current average mileage.

Or just press the reset button on the end of the stalk.

I'm finding the OBC figures to be consistently 2~3% optimistic.

On the E46 it was more like +/- 3%.

Which button? The button on the end of the indicator stalk just cycles through the figures. Do you have to use the flick switch on the side of the stalk when the average consumption is displayed in the centre display panel?

The one on the very end of the stalk, make sure the display is showing what you want to zero (reset) and hold in for a few seconds

320D e46. ranges from 40mpg to 55mpg. Average over 40,000 is 47mpg and actual mpg 1mpg more than OBC.

Agree with Alan, reset the OBC Chris. You'll definately get different readings. I average 32 mpg or so on daily commute and it'll stay roughly the same on a long run. If I reset it prior to a long motorway run, the mpg reads around 35 or more at certain lower motorway speeds.

Gotta love those hills though! Especially the ones with rather fine driving roads!
