Engine/Oil Temperature
Quick query about engine/oil temperature.
I am aware that BMW no longer feel that it is necessary to include the old fashioned water/oil temperature gauges in their current 3 series, but I wondered whether there is any way of telling when your car is up to running temperature, other than driving for 15-20 minutes before using the car "enthusiastically?" I had heard about the variable RPM thingy (not sure what it's called) and have seen it in action on a friend's 520d M Sport - where the lines on the rev counter that appear before the red line drop to a lower rpm when the car is cold and then gradually increase to their normal position when the car warms up (and I've also seen the E46 M3's rev counter lights arrangement - which does a similar thing to the 520d). Was this an option on the E90 or is mine just broken? Thanks, John |

Nope, this is not a feature that exists on non-335/M3 E9x. There is no way to tell your oil temperature is up to working temp, unless you have some kind of external/aftermarket oil temp gauge linked up to the Canbus system.
I'm afraid it's the "drive like a granny for 15 minutes" approach. You can do a retrofit of a 335i instrument cluster into a 330i, which will then lose the MPG scale and replace it with an oil temp gauge, but you're looking at about £1000 all in to the swap. Not really worth it in my very humble opinion!!

only difference in the brochure is between wheel with or witjout steering wheel controls both at 675 plus the alcantara trim but you can use the standard trim, i should confirm with the dealer, lot of money for a temp gauge but it gives me peace of mind

any OBD reader gives you coolant temp - major question is where to mount it nicely. On mine i get:
- coolant - boost - temp after intercooler - exhaust temp before DPF (diesel) & many much less relevant others I don't believe (most) of our cars have oil pressure (it will be a simple switch telling you when pressure is too low), or oil temperature (again it will rely on the oil cooler doing its job when coolant temps are normal). You would need to install your own sensors, wiring, and gauges for that |

One rough way of doing it is to check the oil level on the on-board computer - if the oil is colder than around 160F it won't give you a reading.
