What is this thing (pic inside)?

Mine has oil all over the top . I don't even know what it is to figure out what the issue is. Is it something I can address when I replace the oil filter housing gasket?

(obviously this is not my car -- just stole this pic because it was convenient)

Power steering reservoir, they leak all the time. Replace canister and/or refill.

Has nothing to do with the OFHG.

Thanks!

I figured it wasn't related to the oil filter housing gasket -- just if it was easy enough to fix that I could do both together. My poor car is in need of some love before I go back to E85 .

The cap has a tiny hole in it to vent.
In some tracked cars with a similar cap I've seen some people run a tiny metal vac line in the hole, seal it, then run silicone line from it to a more desirable location (such as through the belly pan to the street)

So they have oil run to the track? What a stupid idea.

Replace the cap oring. $5 part and resolves this issue.

Or a catch can.
New cap may not help unless it's leaking a lot , they all sweat oil from the same hole.
I just wiped mine off and didn't worry about it

Just buy a reservoir sock and throw it on. Hondas have been doing it for years for the same reason and it works extremely well at keeping things clean.

This solves it. If you disagree or have a different suggestion, I'll bet you haven't swapped the oring. No sweatbands, no wiping, no mess. Just $5 every other year.

Just reporting back that after nearly two months, my reservoir has no leaking or sweating. New O-Ring FTW. Do it right, do it once.

BMW has had the same design since my 88 325i. It leaked then and it leaks now.....just wipe it off and deal with it.
