Local lads
I was talking to a couple off lads working on the salvage off the costa concordia . they are working 12hr days 7 days a week for 6 wks at a time then 2 weeks rest ,
They have built a huge ladder from steel to get on the hull and are working inside the boat they said with all the cutting and welding the temerature is 50 degrees and is only bearable due to the money . They said there is a huge hammer breaking up the sea bed in the mid section and when it is flat enough they are going to try and build a steel support as they need to ensure it won't collapse around the mid section. Smit salvage had the contract to remove all the heavy oil and then caretake the vessel until the main contract was awarded to salvage the ship, Titan Salvage have a large yard near where I work and are now the main contractor involved with the salvage , Robbie said there is a total ban on any Photos being taken but when he returns he is going to take a very small camera, I dont get why it is a secret . But maybe its a respect thing . interesting work Id love to have a look around |

Concordia bridge recordings leaked to Italian media
Fresh evidence emerged this week to suggest that the Captain of the Costa Concordia knew the ship was going down but ordered staff to tell passengers it was only a black out.
Recorded conversations from the bridge of the ship, obtained by La Stampa newspaper, show Captain Francesco Schettino saying: "Madonna, what have I done?" just seconds after the ship rammed hit the reef off the island of Giglio in Tuscany. According to reports in the Telegraph, he made a frantic call to the officer in command of the ship's engine room saying: "So are we really going down?" Then, three minutes later, he told an officer on the bridge not to tell passengers that there had been a blackout. Eight minutes later he is accused by prosecutors and marine experts of making a similarly false statement to the Italian Coast Guard, saying: "We've had a blackout, we're just evaluating ... at most we're going to need a tug boat." The disaster in January led to the deaths of 32 people, including a five year old girl. During the evacuation, the Captain is heard calling his wife to tell her that everything was "under control". "We hit a reef, the ship is listing but I performed a great manoeuvre ... everything is under control," he said, but added: "My career as a captain is over." Capt Schettino faces charges of manslaughter, abandoning ship and failing to communicate with maritime authorities. The next court hearing will start on October 15. The only thing he was correct in doing was stating that his career as a captain was over |

Titan
I was in Titan this week talking to some guys they were back on leave they said they have 400 guys working 24/7 on the costa . Mostly italian contractors . They are having huge ballast tanks manufactured in italy with built in pumps they are going to be fixed to the hull sunk using water below the water line then pumped out like a Sub to lift her .
They have a total ban on cameras on site. I dont know what the secret is ? They have another salvage job ongoing in Chili as well |

Titan are going to attempt to turn her next week the guys are sure they have it right any issues and it is going to be next year.
Funny talking to two engineers they said the prefered place for cutting her up by the insurance company is Turkey but the Italian Government is making that almost impossible and insists it will have to be done in a italian yard,I couldnt imagine our government fighting to keep any work for us. Pictures are in the mail today |
