Fix for a wastegate rattle?
I'm pretty sure the noise I'm getting is a wastegate rattle, I would post a sound clip but don't have anything to record to. But anyways the rattle comes as soon as the car is running. After you take it above 2 grand it "rattles" on deceleration until the tach is flat. At first it came on startup and went away after a mile or so but now it just quiets down after a while but is still there. There are probably a bunch on here that have had or have a similar problem.
I worry due to the fact I'm not under warranty anymore and if it was like BMW put a device that detects when your warranty is over so they can gang bang your wallet when ANYTHING goes wrong with your car. My question is if there is a fix other than swapping out your turbos to get rid of it. $10000 seems ridiculous to fix the problem. Also if no action is taken what will happen and why couldn't you swap out wastegates. The turbo swap solution seems like killing an ant with a very expensive baseball bat. It just seems like an overkill. All help would be greatly appreciated. |

Since it's a well know problem BMW may partially cover the costs for replacing the turbos even if you're out of warranty. At least that's what BMW did in my case: they covered the hardware costs (turbos, 4.500 Euros) and my second-party warranty covered the labour costs (1.000 Euros). But I don't know if BMWNA handles this the same way as Bmw Munich.
