I check back on this thread every 3-6 months or so and can't believe the stats. Glad folks have found this helpful as so many other DIYs on here have helped me! I almost never posted this DIY thinking no one else would be interested.

Wilsjay, you very kindly took the time to post instructions and photographs to solve a common, but evasive problem. The very least I could do was take the time to register for this forum and offer my thanks.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

It took me half an hour from start to finish and worked like magic.

This very problem (on my '08 E92 335d) has been driving me mad for over a year, and common internet wisdom suggested the only solution was a new mirror motor. I wonder how many people went down that expensive route unnecessarily?

I must admit I was surprised it worked, as my car is always garaged and the contacts all looked brand new. So maybe simply unplugging the motor forces a reset?

Regardless: it works!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Thanks for this post! Can't believe I didn't come across this thread sooner.

BTW, if you can't find dielectric grease, Vaseline is just as good.

Worked like a top, did this almost a year ago now and my mirror still works like new again!

Really appreciate this Wilsjay. I was quoted $800+ from my dealership for some new mirror motors + labor but this worked just as well. Thank you!

Unbelievable. $800 is absolutely criminal! Especially considering they have this TSB that tells them to try cleaning the contacts before replacing. Not sure what you could do about that, but this is why I always ask for the old parts at least. Glad this helped!

Garage List
Great info!

I will be doing this tomorrow! Like others posting here, it has bothered me for YEARS! But I did not want to go to the "Stealership" (love that term) to pay $$$ for something So easy to just readjust, I can put up with it. But this appears so easy. I was unaware of the TSB.

THANKS!

Update: Done, I hope this fixes the mirror problem. It took ten minutes. I used a plastic car molding pry tool I have to pop the mirror off after pointing the mirror low and inside. I used the dielectric goop for light bulbs and electrical contacts, as I had that laying around. I will post again if problem comes back soon. 71k miles on my 335i and going strong.

I just did this today. Took about 10-15 min. Mirror is easy to pop off, just tilt down and in towards the window like others have said.

Hopefully this will fix my phantom mirror. This thing has been moving all over the place lately... I know it does it with the central locking button, but it also moved if I used my spare metal key to lock or unlock my door. I hope this fixes the issue, I will report back with update after a couple months or so.

I'm going to do this. I was just called and told this repair isn't covered under CPO…though if there's a TSB on it AND it's a safety issue, I'm not sure I understand why is isn't covered…The dealer has been super awesome and is doing a lot of other work and taking care of me so I'm not upset or arguing, especially knowing this DIY exists.

Anyone get this covered under CPO?

I was declined under CPO as well. If you're looking for it, the TSB number is 51 36 08. Apparently, it's not considered a safety issue !

I think there's a fairly good and simplistic argument for it being a safety issue.. Being that if it doesn't readjust properly, and I don't notice immediately, and I go to use it and it's not properly adjusted as I think it should be it based on the expectations of the feature that BMW provided on the car and I hit something, I'd say that's a safety issue.

I'm not arguing because the fix from this thread performed by my dealership trying to help me out when the car was in for other CPO work seems to have worked like a charm. So I'd say definitely try this fix.

Still working!

I'm convinced that disconnecting the motor forces a reset of some kind. The whole assembly went back exactly as it had come off with no work or cleaning needed on the contacts.

Regardless: awesome.

Has anyone tried this method and NOT have it work?

Those look like aluminum pins on that plug, could be oxidation and just re-seating it clears it up. I had this same issue years ago on the main wiring harness on a dodge truck. Whatever pin it was it was always the same one (happened more than once) b/c it took out the dash cluster (lights and gauges) every time. The solution was unplug harness from the fuse block, blow it out and plug it back in.

wilsjay...

I'm having a similar problem on my 2006 330xi. Both mirrors are F$%##$ up and it's driving me nuts. The strange thing is..is that the mirrors tend to fold out and all the way to the 12 "o" clock position (so pointing towards the front of the car) when i press my unlock button on my car. Sometimes when i start my car they do it.....and once in a while, though rare, when i'm driving - all the sudden the mirror will just simply fold out all the way. It has a mind of its own.....

have you had any problems since you did the fix? Can you think of any reason why the unlock on the remote would cause the mirrors to respond in such a way?

my bmw mechanic told me i have to completely replace both mirror assemblies; and then i found out the ridiculous price !!!!

Please help

cheers

Thank you so much for this! Every time I drove in reverse I would want to scream after seeing the mirror not return to its original position.
