Cobb Tuning /w Pro Tune

I spoke to my mechanic, and he told me NOT to get Cobb Tune, without getting it pro tune. And that my car could be damaged without it.

He stated that every car was different, and that no tune can work for all cars. Because of that reason it would be dangerous to drive a generic tune for a long time.

I know what hes saying is true, but i figure JB3,4 Procede Cobb etc etc, are not running at maximum possible performance of any car, therefore not endangering it. Can any one shed some light on this?

Your mechanic is generalizing. There's no danger with COBB or PROcede.

Yes there is no danger. There are people who have been running tunes for thousands and thousands of files.

Pro-Tuning FTW .... but since our Tunes adjust (SMART ECU) we are fine with these Off the shelf tunes that are offered to us at the moment.

Is he a mechanic or a tuner? Ask him how the wastegates or DME works for the N54...

I agree to disagree with the mechanic.

This car doesnt work like 99.8% of the cars out their. The ECU is extremely smart and willing to adapt to changing conditions.

Other cars have to run set parameters and therefore have to be tuned conservatively for differences in conditions.

This.

Most other older cars I wouldn't even think of running a generic map.

Hes a general mechanic with friends that own tuner shops in Toronto. I figure that these off the shelf tunes were safe cause they weren't nearly pushing the limits on our cars. I'm sure if you Dyno Tune any piggyback or tunes, they'll produce much more power.

What you need to understand is that on this vehicle; When you add more power the car will "learn" unlike any other car on the road. Its one of the most ideal ECU's on the market and in the tuner world because of it.

None of the tunes above today can allow for pro tuning.

In the future Cobb will have the ability for Pro tune though.

The rest of them run set parameters of boost fuel and sometimes ignition and let the car adapt to any changing conditions offering damn near close to the best pro tune in any condition, automatically.

I'm trying to word this in ways that are easy to understand.

In the past other platforms if you added a generic tune they would need to be and HAD to be tweaked on the street or dyno, this is not the case on this car. (the car does the tweaking automatically).

You will be ok with any of the above mentioned tunes. If you need any help deciding which route to go and special pricing. I'm a PM away.

Ask your mechanic if the factory BMW tune cannot work for all cars. Last I checked they aren't writing a unique tune for every car that comes off the line.

AS I mentioned twice you cant dyno tune anything as there are no adjustments. You pick a map for your modifications and run it. The built in parameters, Autotune, as well as the DME will allocate the proper structure of fuel boost and ignition on their own.

Its a closed loop system.

There is no interface, fuel graphs, ignition graphs, boost graphs to tweak with these tunes. Not until Pro-tune and ATR come out for the Cobb.

Devas you drive a 2011 E90 M3 -
Cobb doesn't have a tune for the M3.

Look into a supercharger 4 more power.
