what oil are YOU using
Found the old thread of what types of oil people way back when, I decided not to read through 8 pages worth.
Just curious to as what people are CURRENTLY putting into their cars? My benz was a bitch to change oil, so that was done at the shop ALWAYS. Oil is due in my e92. Feedback would be great. If you're bored and want to give some input on what brake pads you guys use (even though there's a current thread) please feel free. Not demanding this one though. So don't waste your finger muscles saying I should read another thread. I also live in Canada eh, it's cold up here. |

This is what the dealer uses in my car and what I use whenever I need to add a little extra... (engine has 125k on it and burns ~1qt every 10k miles) I also add oil treatment every other change.

Pardon my ignorance but oil treatment? I don't think I have EVER used this. I think I will try the Castrol Edge European Formula 0w30, what filters are you using? Just from BMW? I will probably do the change this weekend. Found a great DIY for oil change

It replaces a quart of oil and is something like $12 That oil is $9/qt (make sure it says that it is for BMW, will be right on the front of the bottle) = $54+tax+filters My BMW dealership picks up my car, swaps with a brand new loaner, hand washes my car when they are done, and then delivers it back to me for $95 including the oil treatment and then I don't have to worry about crawling around under the car and disposing of the oil... I run Motul 5W-40 XCESS, have done so for the last 10K miles or so. Engine runs quieter, idles a bit smoother, and I know I’m putting a high quality oil in it. BITG reports have been good, and there aren’t any crazy additive packages in it that concern me. I should do a blackstone analysis on my next oil change, have never done one.

This has always been a concern of mine too. The dealer insists that I only need to do it every 18k miles, but I have them do changes on the 10's...

18K miles?!?!?!?!? Wow. Look modern full syn has come a long way…but there is no way I’d let it run for 18,000 miles in a hot forced induction platform. These cars run at 240-250 all day, that’s much hotter than most cars. We have a reasonably large capacity with the oil cooler (7 quarts or so), but still that’s just too long to run oil. I swap mine every 5-6K, 10K is probably fine. I would not push it much farther than that though.

I have always used Mobil 1 in all my cars, and have had excellent results. I use the 0w40, which is listed as a BMW LL-01 oil. It also meets Mercedes specs, and we have run it in my husband's car, which is nearing 200k, and have had great results.
I always change it at 10k miles, no more no less. Arguably, you can change oil whenever you want, but I've had numerous service techs advise me to change it at 10k (and they know I do my own oil changes, so there is no financial gain for them). I will tell you though that in last car (02 Volvo S60, got rid of it at 190k), it burned 1 quart between 10k oil changes even with lots of hard driving. My husband's 2005 Mercedes E320 burns even less- about 1/2 a quart every 10k miles, and my 2007 BMW 328xi does not even use a detectable amount between oil changes. THE BIGGEST THING IS MAKING SURE IT MEETS BMW LL-01 SPECS! There are only a few that meet this spec, and they are the same that meet Mercedes oil specs as well. I don't think brand matters all that much to be honest. Usually Wal Mart has it cheapest, regular price is $24 for a 5+ quart jug, and sometimes it goes on sale for $22. I usually buy several jugs at a time, since the BMW and Mercedes use the same oil and the Merc takes 9.5 quarts per change. |

So Mobil 1 0W-40 Euro blend LL01 it is..... !
... and $95.00 for and oil change and all that? You guys must have great prices down there... My indy garage (german specialists) charges me 220, for either my benz or beamer and it is still cheaper than dealer.... I see a lot of great feedback on the Mobil 1, I used that prior on my other cars so I think I will proceed with that. Appreciate all your feed back though! |
