Break in question
So as some of you know I've recently purchased my first BMW (328i coupe), I have about 250 miles on it right now and I treat it very nicely as far as the engine is concerned, I never go above 3k rpm and keep it usually below 2k or at 2k for acceleration.
But tell me this... I let my best friend drive it once time, and he hammered the shit out of it for about 1 mile or 1.5 miles. Did I fuck my break in up? Because after that one incident I reverted back to my normal driving style (very mellow) and never go above 3k rpm You guys think the engine suffered any longevity prowess because of this little splurge? |

They ran your engine at high revs at the factory to make sure it worked under that stress. You are fine. There are LOTS of disagreements about this, but you are ok. I have your car and have been driving it hard from day one (only after significant warm-up). Will be changing oil at 1200 miles (instead of 12,000) and it's all good from there. Have fun. Punch that baby!

There's a whole can of worms that have already been opened about this but, I've heard that modern cars actually fair better when you run them hard during break in. Whether that's true or not... well I'm not sure. What I can say is that you do need to break in the upper rev ranges. After about 500-700 miles you should start shifting at somewhere about 5k rpm and closer to 1000 miles you should take it up to redline. Also you should let it engine brake back down to idle.
I wasn't exactly nice to mine when it was new and 78000 mi later it has no problems (with the engine that is, the clutch is not so happy though lol). Oil consuption is better than when it was new and the gas mileage is the same. I don't think your little adventure destroyed your engine. Mine has made a trip to 8000rpm and back (oops) about a year ago and it seems to be fine.

Just crossed the 1200 mile break in barrier. Time to LET ER RIP. You will be OK, but I would punch your friend for driving your new car like that. I mean if he reved it high, that would be one thing. But if he hammered the SH out of it, come on man. I babied mine for the first 1200.

YES. please take it in. If you are concerned about the longevity of your car/engine you will take it in. I know BMW claims you dont need your first oil change till 15,000 but that is unheard of. Even the M3 has to go in for a after break in service (around 1000miles) which INCLUDES oil change.
