sounds like you found the squeak. I do know that grease and brake dust do not go together and will eventually gum up. Is there enough room for a thin teflon plastic strip to be glued in place?

What would cause the brake shoe to rub up against the dust shield?

There's a lot of space, but using teflon tape didn't come in my mind at the time.

It's designed that way to "rest" on the dust shield.

Pardon my newb comment, but does the brake shoe spin when the car is moving or does it stay stationary?

Well yeah. It's like a drum brake design. You pull the lever and shoes expand and press against the drum on the inside.

Still haven't had time to do it myself so I'm going to take it to my local indy shop and see what happens. I hope this works

The shoes do not spin with the wheel/hub. They only rotate out to make contact with in inside of the rotor hat, which does spin with the hub/wheel.

Props to onebadmofo for trying to fix this himself, though I don’t think the rust spots are the solution. What E90Pilot says ^^ is true. E-brake shoes don’t spin, nor does the dust shield, so the rust you see is probably just from surface contact. I would be willing to bet the squeaking is the e-brake shoes ever so slightly rubbing on the inside of the rotor (which does spin) and when you adjusted them, it got rid of this. For those who have the problem try adjusting the e-brake and see if that fixes the issue.

Possibly. There is an adjustment screw for the e-brake between the brake shoes on each side of the rear brakes. You can use a screwdriver to adjust either up or down inside the brake drum to adjust the tightness of the handbrake lever.

No, you need to lubricate the contact points.

Which way to loose the ebrake screw in order to loosen the ebrake handle (up or down)?

I think the ebrake screw needs to adjust on both sides of the rear brake.

Regarding the contact point, are you referring to the dust shield where the rust were found?

Yes that's what I believe was the cause.
Not sure which way the ebrake screw goes, just spin it and try it out

x2. I just did my brakes like 3 weeks ago and I get a good squeak from the right rear until i start braking.

I should adjust my parking brake while I'm at it.

+1 One of my local Indy shops wanted to charge me $150 per side to adjust the e brake and grease up the contact points. No way am I paying $300.

That's absolutely ridiculous. I may try and see what I can do this weekend.

A few pictures and a brief write up on this as you do it would be one of the most viewed DIY's on this forum. If you felt like helping use newb's out.
