transmission speed limiter?

So while driving this weekend I noticed (first time I have gotten up to this speed) that when once the speedo goes over 160 or on the gps around 255k that my car decides it doesn't want to be in 6th anymore and switch's down to 5th which throws the tranny in to some sort of safe mode. After the first time it did in when i was DS... then a little while later I was in the Manuel mode and it did it again. With a quick restart of the car its fine and gives no problems. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this and what the fix is. I have a 07 328xi sedan.

Your car is electronically limited to 155 mph. It probably feels like it can do more but the computer won't let it go past that.

thats what I always thought, its 130 mph because without sports package the tires aren't rated for anything higher.

Also there isn't the auxiliary oil cooler installed with that configuration. That is needed for sustained top speed or the oil may overheat.

I have an e90 xi without the sport package and came with the 17" wheels. I was able to go over 140 mph. I never topped it out but the fasted I've gone was about 142 mph

Yeah mine reads 55 when driving 52. Basically off by 3 at that range. Makes sense since I've gotten the speedo to read 135 twice, but it was probably only 130

update, I have a tune from the local chiptuner guy that got rid of the 137 limit, also upgraded the tires to handle the speed. But got tired of the stupid station wagons passing me so I bought a quattroporte and have no issues getting too 170 now . still have the 328 and have changed out all the suspension components, air intake and about to order the supersprint exhaust and then its off to the ring to see what it can really do.
