It's not about how much one sector is hurting is it? Really? I accept my 5 year pay freeze and £200 a year pension increase payment a month. It happens and I roll with it. But the public sector is a huge part of your daily life. Me as a teacher, nurses, the underpaid fucker that empties your bins... so don't be so fucking rude about us. No need. That's all.

Not nice to see anyone getting a harsh deal.

Anyone with any technical/engineering background needs to start looking oil industry and possibly Aberdeen.

There is genuinely thousands of jobs up here, paying good money and nobody to fill them.

Never seem things like this in my time in the oil industry.

Manufacturing is way way over capacity for a long time to come.

+1

Well said. My dad was a teacher, the myopic idiocy of those that can't see past "6 weeks off in the summer, what an easy life" need a slap.

19k a year? Seriously? I hope your a trainee and only 18year old.

I think your company are taking the piss out of you. (presuming
Your in an important role) Were you on more and they cut your salary by loads...? At least your in a job, better than being out of work.

That's the thing, Aberdeen is miles away. If I was gonna work away from home might as well go to OZ

Well it was 24 (with a minimum of 7 hours a week ot) last year but that total included working nearly and a mean nearly every Saturday in the year for 5 hours at time and a half and and working every public holiday at double time for 8 hours. The only day we don't work is sundays although we maybe do two or three of those a year at double time for 8 hours and Christmas day. Maybe then my basic pay was less than 19. I am the charge hand working for a local council in maybe the second biggest cemetery in n Ireland. I am in charge of a minimum of 5 men and drive a jcb, caterpillar type excavator a small 2.5 tonne one and 3 tonne dumpers. We average about 800 funerals a year in all weather along with other duties including general maintenance of the cemetery. I don't think I'm overly paid but then like you say I'm in a better position than a lot of people as in I have a job. I wish I was 18. I'm 42 and am divorced with two teenage sons and my own home and have worked in my present job for the last 10 years. Not all public sector employees are on a fortune so you can guess it winds me up a bit when I hear people thinking were all the same.

My sisters a primary teacher and on £45k apparently, private sector though so not sure how the pension works. Lots of holiday though.

Aberdeen suffers as possible to earn much more in other oil and gas regions.

I thought the OZ boom kind of went bust?

When my company shut our factory in East Kilbride a few guys did head out there and the engineering sector is not what is was.

Aberdeen is miles away but for someone needing to work it is not a bad place to come.

I'm not Aberdonian but there is a good life to be had up here. Very good standard of living with loads of jobs.

Our company has been advertising solid for 2 years to get workers and gets nowhere. All the companies are the same in Aberdeen in the oil industry.

They aimed down to England looking to bring guys up from Sheffield etc with the steel industry dropping off and only got 2 people expressing an interest.

They take unskilled guys on these day and hope for the best.

Most of the jobs will command around £40k minimum and even the guys willing to put in the hours on the machine tools are hitting £60-70k a year.

No other place or industry in the UK is going to pay the guys the kind of money that is available up here.

It would be something I'd like to try.

I've got family over there and my cousin came over and stayed at my parents and worked in Edinburgh as a draughtsman for 9 months.

He loved over here and said doing it ended up being the best thing ever. Walked back into his old job but as his CV was more impressive from his time here his bosses offered him a $20k salary increase.

Still though it isn't enough money to make me desperate to go over.

I thought their construction and engineering sectors were both struggling?

Unfortunately Sheffield is rapidly becoming yet another post-industrial city full of slack jawed, work shy, dole claimants. 10 years ago you'd have got who you wanted but it's ingrained now.
