2013 335iS Concern
On bmwusa.com when reading/building a new 2013 335iS the car's engine advisement/highlights seemed to have changed to the N55 motor instead of the N54 motor.
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ce.aspx?Id=429 Can anyone confirm that the 2013 335iS doesn't have the N54 motor anymore or is this just a typo or some type of marketing tool? edit: It now states TwinPower Technology instead of Twin Turbo technology as it did for the 2012 model. It also says it was value variable timing and I was under the impression that the N54 did not have that.

But you're name is N55, how tragic.

LOL I know tell me about it.
Yes, N55 is the newer motor. I went from a 08' N54 to a 11' N55 and now to a 12' N54. I had my N55 almost FBO and I wasn't happy with the tuning capabilities of it. Some Main Reasons: (Not trying to open up a huge debate) - N55 = Cast Internals N54 = Forged - Stock N55 Turbo is too small to squeeze much more HP out of it. - For the money I put into the N55 I could have had a 380-400 hp N54. - No DP Fix Mod available for the N55 yet.(Correct me if i'm wrong)

I think there are a couple other members that pulled the plug on the N55 as well.

The N55 is also more efficient from what I understand.

Not to revive this thread but does anyone know if the overboost function is only in the DCT equipped cars?

I have a 2012 335is 6MT. I can tell you that I have a really hard time noticing the overboost. I don't know if it's either A) not coming on or B) too smooth to notice.
When I test drove the DCT, it was very clear when the overboost kicked in. Just FYI in case you ordered the 6MT! I may have the car dyno'd soon to see if something is truly wrong or if I'm just horrible at noticing the extra bump in torque. It's definitely a fast/fun car to drive! You'll enjoy it. |

Not sure I would go so far to say that one is "better" than the other.
I'd personally sacrifice a little speed/quickness in order to feel more "connected" via 6MT vice DCT. If you prefer auto and/or want to go a little faster in a straight line.. then DCT is the way to go. With the DCT I could feel the overboost come on because I'd get pushed back in the seat a little bit. I've been told that this might be due to the fact that the DCT could be downshifting at the same time but I'm not sure. Either way, it's just more noticeable with the DCT. |

Regardless of whether the overboost function is there or not for the 6MT (almost certain that it is), it's still a pretty fast vehicle. It doesn't feel "fast" to me because I came from a 300whp/370wtq AWD Subaru but the BMW has a LOT of potential for high hp/tq with a couple mods (tuning!). You won't regret purchasing the 335is.

Thanks. Yeah I probably won't regret it. Just want to make the right choice. Still up in air. Waiting till August 6th to finally make my decision.

Thanks for the heads up. Seeing that you are a 6MT owner, do you have the overboost function? Is it noticeable?
