They were clever to change the inner section which would have cost less, but gave such a dramatic change to the look of the rear.

Your problem may be electrical compatibility over physical fit.
I looked at a couple of pics comparing the two, and the light bars in the lower half wouldn't match up.

I might have to blacklines now. Though I still think split armrest is my next upgrade. I also noticed the 2009 has the old single-piece armrest.

It's interesting how simple changes to the rear lights make a big difference, especially on the wagon. The lines are straight, thus appear more purposeful than the previous soft look. Same with the shape of the side view mirrors - less curve translates better.

Front hood and grille look good also.

The front bumper is still a mess - I don't like the old or new one. When don't they just make it a simple once-piece straight bumper? The old one is missing a middle piece, and the LCI is still missing the middle piece, and it adds new and strange stuff to it, making it look very unnatural.

In such areas, the BMW Group manufactures automobiles from parts kits in assembly plants. This is the so-called “Completely Knocked Down” (CKD) production process.

In the CKD process, certain parts and components are packaged as kits in precisely defined assembly steps and exported for assembly in the respective countries. These kits are then supplemented with locally manufactured parts in the partner countries. Assembly takes place on location with adherence to the BMW Group's global quality standards.

Currently, the BMW Group uses CKD assembly to manufacture automobiles with partners in six locations (Thailand, Malaysia, Russia, Egypt, Indonesia, India).

Try Azenis RT615 or RE-01R. performance tires have stiff sidewalls, stiff sidewalls contribute to a harsher ride. The OE sport package tires are actually very solid for track use

Looks like the 2009 e93 will not have any such modifications. From the BMW release:

"The 2009 models are: 328i Sedan and Sports Wagon; 328i xDrive Sedan and Sports
Wagon; 335i, 335i xDrive and 335d Sedans. The 3 Series also encompasses Coupes and
retractable-hardtop Convertibles; these continue with less extensive updates for 2009."

This is nothing new, the coupe and convertible were released after the sedan so they will not receive updates now, they will get them 3 years after launch date just like the sedan did.

Anyone know if there will be new wheels on the '09 E90? Are the ones in the pictures already available (particularly those on the E91)?

Thanks for posting the pics! Quick lookup from the ordering guides indicates the following:

328i Sedan Std is 282
328i Sedan Sport Package is 286
328i Sedan 17" All Season Option is 285
328xi Sedan/Sport Wagon Sport package is 284
328xi Sedan/Sport Wagon Sport Package with mixed tires is 286
335i Sedan Std is 284
335i Sedan Sport Package is 287

IMHO I think the 328 Sport Package rims actually took a step backwards aesthetically (with the exception of the 285 option), although the non sport package rim and optional 17" is an improvement.

I'm actually very happy with my 2008 335i Sedan Sport Package Star Spoke 162 rims and that is one thing that I'm not bummed about with the refresh (along with the front bumper). While I like the 287s since they come on the 335i ZSP coupes and are awesome for the coupes, I really like the 162s better on the sedan (although they are "old" now).

I'm curious to see what will come on the coupes for 2009.

Pros of 2009 - Revised iDrive, Hood, LED Taillights, headlight/DRL/Cornering lamp changes, Oyster and Saddle Brown Leather, Front PDC

Cons of 2009 - Price increase, Logic 7 is now an option, lower front fascia, no more Sparkling Graphite (they should have added Space Gray instead of replacing Sparkling Graphite)

Overall, you can't lose with a 2008 or a 2009 in my book....
