iPhone 5 compatibility issues with USB port in center console?

Just picked up my 09 335d, and tried to connect my iPhone 5 to the cars sounds system via the USB port in the center console. The music is not getting to the speakers, nor is the car able to see the contents of the 'iPod'

I know there is a new connector for the iPhone 5 and that might have something to do with it. Has anyone had this experience?

I was thinking about getting the I5 as well and was wondering if there would be any issues. Apparently there are.

Don't have a IPhone5 but i do have IOS 6! That works perfect!

Apple already informed that the Lightning Output actually is a USB2 certified output...

So it should work...

Even though Apple sells a $29 Lightning port adapter, the new technology will mean obsolescence for some older accessories that relied on the 30-pin connector. "This adapter lets you connect devices with a Lightning connector to many of your 30-pin accessories," Apple said on its store page for the adapter, but then added a big caveat: "Video and iPod Out not supported."

It looks like the 'Thunderbolt adaper' will allow the ipod out feature to work. Apple's explanation of 'ipod out', is not what it means..

Careful on terminology, Thunderbolt is a whole different thing and shouldn't be confused with the Lighting interface.

Although they're both "cable on a chip" setups, they've very different interfaces and not interchangable as far as I know.

Will the Lightning adapter work then? This Apple thing is so confusing...

I do not have idrive in my car. I may just stop at the apple store on my way home from work and pick up an adapter and see if that solves the problem.

Try it, and let us know what happens.

The "lightening to 30 pin adapter" can be used to hook your phone to the BMW y cable. It will pass audio out and control. It will not do "iPod out" which confusingly has nothing to do with playing the music through the car using the black y cable.

The adapter is not available yet. The web page just says October.

Here is more information about adapter.

it appears the "ipod out" feature is responsible for sending the iphone/ipod's display to your idrive. So with the new adapter, you'll get audio, but you won't get the information displayed on your nav screen.

sounds like a big step down for people who have the iphone4 and idrive.

Wouldn't the adapter make it work? I mean that's what the adapter is for and that's what I expect to happen when I pick up my iPhone5 in a month or so.

picking up my iPhone 5, hopefully soon, and I am wondering if an adapter on the y-cable will work, anyone have first hand success or failures to share? Is the lightning adapter available yet?

This is not actually true. The "iPod out" only affects cars that have combox and snap in adapter with the extended iPod interface option. The adaptor cannot be used for those cars to pass through the extended iPod interface.

I've just tried hooking up my iphone 5 to the idrive by connecting the lightning cable that came with the iPhone to the usb in the armrest, and all works as it should. I can see song info and artwork on the idrive, control the iphone 5 from the idrive and the iphone is charging.
I have a 2011 e90 with a build date of 04/2011, professional navigation with 6FL, but no 6NR, if that makes any difference.

How did you connect? Do you have the BMW y-adapter that has the USB and headphone output? If so, that has a 30 pin connector and won't attach to a iPhone 5. If you used the lightning USB cable, that likely won't work. BMW's setup (at least on my 2010), requires their y-adapter. I anticipate the y-adapter with the 30-pin to lightning adapter will work fine, but I haven't seen the adapter available yet (as mentioned above).

Good luck.
Rich

BTW - here is a pic of the cable:

There's already a much longer thread about all of this here, reliable information starting around Page 2 and covering wired audio, Bluetooth audio, Bluetooth calls, text message display on iDrive, and iPod Out, which yes despite media errors just refers to the iPod video interface on iDrive, not analog audio or external playback control: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...=746701&page=2. Basically, if you have a car that requires a Y-cable (which an 09 would) you need to get the Lightning adapter that isn't yet available, or use a Lightning USB cable plus a separate headphone cable, but that won't sound as good because you'll be piping amped audio rather than line-level (but it should work until the adapters are available). With 9/2010 production and later cars with Combox, the standard USB cable works fine. I'm running that now.

The Bluetooth update can't hurt though: www.bmw.com/update
