Exclamation 225/45/17 winter tires on 8" and 8.5" wide 194M wheels, pics to compare

Updated with pics of new Michelin snow tires on page 2!!!

I've seen many questions about this, if you can put 225/45/17 tires on both the 17x8" front and 17x8.5" rear OEM wheels like style 161, 188 and 194M.

So I have the 194M and I went out and got my winter tires today in good time before the winter and snow.

The tires are Vredestein Nord-Trac Xtreme 225/45/17 94Q.

UPDATED with some pics with 10mm spacers in the rear in post #17.

Here's the pics I took.

Left 17x8.............................................. .................................................. ...............Right 17x8.5

Does the tire on the 8.5" rim look stretched at all?

As you see on the pics, the right tire (on the 8.5" rim) look more streched than the left one, but it fine.

Stretching the tires

How do they look on the car from the side and rear of the car once mounted. Do they look pushed in because of the different rear offset? Does anyone have side and rear photos?

Havn't tried them on the car yet with the winter tires on. But I guess they will look pretty tucked, because they did that with the 255/40 summertire.

How about protection for the rim? Is the side of the rim at the bead more exposed with the 8.5s?

Yes, but there's still some protection from the tire on the 8.5"

I'm bumping this thread from last fall since there's a lot of winter tire talk and question now.

Just waxed the winter wheels with Pooboy's World Wheel Sealant, ready for the winter dirt.

I know skinny is better in the snow, does that also go for rims? For example, if a 225 tire accepts 7.5 to 9" rims, what is best? I know my snow package is 18x7.5, don't know the offset off the top of my head. But I believe the tires sit 2 mm inside of stock. I went for total cost, not looks, as they're for winter....

Also, the tire protector isn't substantial on mine (Ultragrip Performance).

IMO it depends. If the rims are 17's you can run 7.5 but that might be a bit too narrow (I personally would run 17x8 or 8.5 to increase traction). The same goes for 18's. If you're choosing between say a 17x7.5, 8.5 and 9, I would go with the 8.5.

I think the best fit for 225 is a 8" wide wheel.

I put the winters on today, waxed and really for the winter.

And this year I've got 10mm spacers in the rear.

No snow yet, but the roads are dirty so it's no fun driving around with my 20" 3-piece with chrome lips.

There's no problem running 225s all around.. no big deal.
You put tires on wheels. You don't fit wheels to tires.

The 225/45 would even fit on a 7" rim so your perfectly fine with 7,5".

Yeah, I know the tucked look, I've been running that the two last winters.

And I think 15mm would be even better, but since I'm running the 10mm spacers in the front in the summer, I don't bother with another set of spacer.
