Where is everybody getting the idea that this is a $550 "kit" available for retrofit?

The article clear states that it is a Limited Performance Edition of the 335i Sedan, which means that you need to buy a new 335i Sedan to get it. And it's doubtful that the price for this "option" is only $550. This is probably bad information or a typo, just like the "0.02 second" gain in the 0-60 time. I'm guessing that it's at least $1,550 if not $2,550. The 335is Coupe is a $5,650 premium over a 335i Coupe with the M Sport Package. There's no way that BMW could offer a bump of 20HP and 32 ft./lbs. of torque at that price.

"According to the broadcast, this will be available on August production 335i sedans. There will also be a dealer-installed retrofit for a similar price. More details forthcoming soon."

This exactly too. All of your AM products, most of the time is money down the tubes.

MOST BMW performance parts retain up to a dollar for dollar value with the upgrade.

So your $1500 Perf. Exhaust will net you $1500 on the resale, all you're paying for is labor.

As for the retrofit issue - about a month ago BMW mentioned how they were going to split the PPK into 2 stages - stage 1 software, and stage 2 hardware.

I think this is evidence of that. I'm sure it'll be about $600-$700 installed as a retrofit.

Does anyone know if these PPK software-only stages are available at the dealer yet?

A new 335i ordered in May just arrived at my dealer on Sunday. They're ordering this retrofit today... just need the VIN to download software.

I was curious about the "badge" and they explained that as far as the knew it was a badge that goes under the hood to indicate to techs that there was more to that engine

I'm hoping to have the car with this option applied in my hands on Friday!

Not certain yet since I'm still in negotiation mode with the purchase. I know that's not very useful. I'll update this when I know more, but I'm not paying more than the stated $550.

That has got to be 0.2 seconds faster. If it were 0.02 seconds, then there's no way they should be bragging about it.

If I leased my car, I really wouldn't give a shit. By all means, throw all the tuning codes you want, give me the most amount of HP for the least amount of money. I'll even let it ruin my HPFP a few times.

But those here that own their vehicles and don't intend on giving them up every 2 or 3 years may want something that is from the manufacturer, and will be backed by the manufacturer. Will Cobb, Shiv, or Burger replace my engine or turbos if their product causes harm? No. But BMW NA will (prob. Dinan too).

So instead of telling others what we "need" to do, why don't you tell us how these aftermarket products won't break my car and why experienced tuners would only go the AM route?
Read my last previous post's last sentence.

I don't feel like writing an informative essay. Go google "Void Warranty" and maybe you could get some idea.

Not bad for $550 a gain of 20hp/32 Ib-ft of torque plus the rest of goodies all under factory warranty. I wish BMW would offer more of these cheaper factory mods in future across the line up.

I hope it is $550 as said earlier and the labor cost does not turn it into $1500. Also, why can't this be offered across the lineup of all 1er, 3er, 5er, and Z4's.

I was thinking similar. it might be available for any 335i with M-sport package. Funny, cause they price it only "$550", yet you need the M-Sport package. So if you don't have the M-sport package already, you are paying thousands.

It will NOT retain dollar-to-dollar value. No way in hell a used product retains equal amount of dollar value at the point of resale. Most goods depreciate. But I do agree to a certain extent that OEM performance parts will hold MUCH better resale value at the end, and easier to sell as a "whole" package. Meaning, when you sell your vehicle, buyers wouldn't mind seeing/paying extra for OEM parts installed, while most buyers wouldn't want aftermarket parts on it. Still, according to your false theory, if your vehicle is worth $30,000 and added $1500 BMW Perf. Exhaust, you won't exactly get $1500 more on top. That is how market works.

Aftermarket parts however, has potential to gain money back (in terms of sales income) by "parting out", selling parts separately. Good quality aftermarket parts will hold excellent resale value. Avoid cheap Ebay products, stick with top quality aftermarket parts with high reputation, you will have just as less problems as OEM and will hold good resale value.

They just came back with a dealer retrofit cost of $3,300.

Called another dealer's parts dept. and they said they'd need the VIN, but it would be at least $1,900 for the kit alone.

Guess I'll be living without this option

As I suspected. $550 was a pipe dream. Time to update the announcement with a more realistic price.

the article says "for a similar price". so $550 is similar to $3300?

~$1900 is the cost of the performance power kit (the one that has the added cooling which has been offered for a while) without labor. Are you sure that you were talking apples to apples with the person in the parts department? If this new package has just been announced publicly, how does some guy in a parts department know what the cost, including labor, is going to be?

Maybe this is a software update only (no cooling parts) and grills and a badge. That seems doable for $550.

Would not be surprised if this were the case. Many sales people don't even know about this option yet. This was literally announced yesterday via monthly dealer broadcast. Not everyone catches those.

I suspect this is true which is why I reached out to another dealer. Even still I'm not convinced they're operating on current, accurate info. Why do parts dept guys sound so derp on the phone?

Anyhow, my CA was out today and she's pretty geeky so I'm going to have her verify.... Stay tuned.
