I had a mazda 6 MPS from New and thoroughly enjoyed it..In thick fog and snow it managed very securely and safely, whilst also giving some fun when needed. Was very quick in straight line and grip around bends.. but had to keep foot down or else car got confused and understeered too much as rear wheel drive didn't really kick in.
Also the car was very well specced for what I needed... and looked like a Q-car in the black pearl finish. The Xenons were far better than on my E90. The clutch is heavy and easy to stall the car. Gives the left knee a good work out and ladies complain it is hard to drive. The fuel consumption was the killer for me, even driving in high gears where there was plenty of torque, I struggled to get over 25mpg... and that was mostly motorway runs. But it was far more comfortable at large speeds compared to the E90. I got the car new for a little over £18K, did 11K miles in 6 months and sold it for £12K. I do miss it and would consider one if the tax wasn't £400pa. Or as a far cheaper alternative to Audi's performance models. |

Thats a good point about the road tax. If its registered before 23 March 2006 then it will be £270 else it will be £460
That would be enough to be a deal breaker for me, the higher amount is a lot of tax to pay on an old car. Like 8-9% of its value every year on road tax. Fair enough on a fast car like a 335i or M3, but a 2006 plate Mazda? |

I was the same about the tax paid the £400+ tax on my 59 MPS and also the 335i and was worth it to run the cars. Although its quiet refreshing now to only have to pay £270.
Also worth remembering to get the full power from the DISI engine you need to run Super Unleaded. The 330i runs just fine on standard fuel. I'm with dopper99 - Get an e46 M3 if you can stretch that far... amazing value cars . + The tax is only £270 IIRC |

Not a bad option. I'd be torn between that and the 225 1.8t depending on my intentions. If I wanted to mod the car and get decent gains for not much money then it would be the 225 all day every day. Performance wise there's nothing it but the 3.2 does sound nice.

Another characteristic of the engine was white smoke when sitting in a lot of traffic for too long... it was nothing wrong with car though. Mine was black... I can email you photos if you like. It was really a smart car and definitely underrated. I do miss it's sure-footedness. PM me your email address if you want photos, or the Reg number. |

But what a car the 205 GTI is/was. I had one and one of my friends has had about 4 and still owns one. His has no carpets but does have some holes in the floor for that extra added close to death feeling. Not that a 205 needs any help

I'm currently waiting on the recent interest in the 1.6 caused by the Pistonheads article to die down a bit so I can buy one.
When I had mine (about 18 years ago) I was too young and stupid to realise it was so easy to crash. Drove it like a I stole it and lived to tell the tale. I think I would drive one with A LOT more respect and caution now.

Ahh so you're one of the ones has has caused the 'classic car price hike' aka price increase as only a few left as most where smashed by over enthusiastic young drivers.
I owned my 1.9GTI about 8 years ago now a came close to writing it off a few times, in fact i remember a close your eyes moment quiet vividly... High speed lift off going over a fly-over expansion joint on a constant radius bend.... IDIOT... Much like you i was young,19, and very in experienced. My friends one is a track prepped 1.9 with mi16 engine from the 405 in it. Amazing car when its running. If i could afford to have another car i would get either the 1.9GTI or my old e30 325i again. |
