sticky handbrake on E90

Not long ago I replaced my handbrake cable, brake shoes and discs. Wasn't too happy wit the result as I have to pull the handbrake up more clicks than I would like until it's tight. When I was happy with the adjustment (about 4 clicks to tightish) the drums were getting hot and I felt resistance while driving. But that's maybe a topic for another time.

Right now I want to fit new rear callipers and to try fix another issue while at it - somewhat sticky handbrake.

If I stop on an incline and engage the handbrake at a traffic light sometimes it does not roll freely once the handbrake is released. When it happens, if there is enough of an incline to overcome whatever is causing the resistance, at first I hear a creaking sound as it starts edging forward and then the resistance goes away after a second or two and it rolls freely. The handbrake is adjusted to not be too tight as I wanted to avoid the brake drums heating up after the initial adjustment.

Any ideas what could be causing the resistance?

It could be so many things that it’s hard to say… have you taken off the rotors and had someone else pull and release the brake to visually observe the travel?

If it’s sticking on the 3/9 positions you can try some brake lube in those locations. It’s what is perscribed in TIS.

I haven't tried anything yet, just trying to gather any info I can before I do. What makes it stick in the 3 and 9 positions?

It’s not really 3/9, more like 10/8 and 2/4, but it’s the points where the shoes glide over the dust shield.

There’s a pic at the end of this:

This could be it. I'll have to take it all apart again and inspect it.

FYI, I had an issue with parking brake shoes having cracks in the braking material which caused them to stick randomly and overhead the rear rotors. Sounds like you need to inspect the rear rotors and parking brake shoes.

Where did you source your brake shoes and rotors from?

TBH I can't remember where I bought them from. But I'll see what they look like once I have the rotors off.

But how does cracked braking material make them stick?

Well the crack makes the shoe "bow" out where the crack exists and continues to touch the inner surface of the rotor. I would make sure they are high quality brake parts from a reputable manufacturer.

I personally have Zimmerman rotors and ATE brake shoes and haven't had an issue. My buddy used some parts on his E60 from Autozone and we had tons of issues with parts not working properly and the rotors warped extremely quickly.

Same here, I (stupidly) swapped some Pagid with the same shit.
Never had a good handbrake.
Couldn't understand it.
Then got BMW discs, pads, shoes, retainers and cable lever.
Only a few clicks now.
Pays to get it right first time. I'll never learn though.🙃
