If they did do it - and they won't. Bets on how long it was re-introduced as an "environment" tax or similar so they'd get it both ways.

Doesn't seem so long ago I used to fill up the car before crossing to Europe. Now it's wait 'till the other side!

Musn't forget that before it's spent, our hard earned has already been taxed several times.

Then it gets taxed when you do spend (VAT, fuel duty etc). If you save it you get taxed on the interest. If you're unfornate enough to pass away you/your family get taxed on it again!!

It should all be on fuel. Pay as you go is the only fair way.

But most of the labour electorate are too stupid to see that and would just scratch their balls in their tracky's and read what the Mirror tells them about stealth taxes. It would be one of the most un-stealthy and up front taxes you could have. It does exactly what it says on the tin.

As it is now the system benefits those that do lots of miles and penalises those who do few!!!

Completely the opposite of what we should be doing. I'm no greeny and I do 20K a year in my 335i at 25mpg (v power), but I can still see how wrong it is that I only have to pay £240 tax or something.

Pittance, it would barely by 1 new rear tyre.

It seems to work with the company car tax bracketing, really pushing people towards low co2 cars, but then once they've got them there's no incentive to use them less.

That's why I take the money (and 40p / mile mileage) and buy my own car, a 335i would be a killer on CC tax, but £240 a year in road tax - bargain!!!
