no locking gas cap WTF?

or so i thought, when i first went to fill it up i was pretty pissed, between the presumably non locking gascap and the 50$ in gas

ever since then its been in the back of my mind and i kind of felt cheated

until today while i was washing my car, i get over to drying by the gascap and go to pop it open to dry inside and it wont come open, turn out it locks closed while the car is locked

+1 to BMW for that ive always had the cable or electric release kind where oyu have to push or pull something from inside, but this is like 10x better

I remember when I first got my E46 330xi. I tried to fill her up once with the doors locked. I noticed I could open the gas tank lid. Great feature.

For me it was pretty simple. When I tried to find the "release latch" to fill it up I couldnt find it. So I figured maybe I should try to push on the lid and see. Sure enough it came out.

So naturally I thought that if it's always unlocked, that might create some problems bcus anyone could just open it. So I tried locking it to see if it would still be open- the rest is history.

it's awesome! i don't use it often but it's good to know.

1. store your valuables in your trunk...ie. your laptop/sniper rifle/pelican briefcase with $50,000 in drug money etc.
2. move the switch in the glove box into the lock position. then lock the glove box with the integrated key.
3. now the trunk is completely locked off. you cannot open from hitting the trunk release button inside the car.

so even if someone smashes your windows, and they hit the interior trunk release button...they can't steal from the trunk. they would have to try lockpicking the glove box first or steal your entire car.

so basically...it protects your stuff from smash and grab theft.

sorry this is but couldn't help it...

I wondered about that switch. What if you just fold down the arm rest between the back seats and reach into the trunk and pull the handle? Shouldn't there be a lock on the ski bag thing?

yeah, i didn't realize it was like that when i first got the car until when i went to fill up one time and realize my gas door wasn't opening, i got a little worried thinking one the gas doors broken and two if it were broken how am i going to get it to the dealership without gas to check out the problem if there were a problem...but within a matter of seconds found out that you had to unlock the car to open the gas door

The skibag should only be removable from the trunk but it isn't.
