I got my first tint ticket from some barely educated knuckle-dragger on the QE2 near Leduc today. He didn't scrape my tints; just wrote the ticket and drove back to Tim Hortons (I assume).

Plan A is hope he gets hit by a sand truck before the court date

Plan B is fight the ticket.

Anyone have any experience with fighting tint tickets in Alberta?

The tints are 35% btw, nothing dark.

In Alberta, the law says no tint. I had my windows tinted (while I was living in Edmonton/Calgary) but I just kept it to 50%.

I suppose you can say it was factory tinted. If he didn't check if it was factory tinted or a film, then you'll have the benefit of the doubt. My friends who had darker tint got pulled over a lot. I think the ticket is $60. In all honesty, I'd just pay it since it's really not worth fighting. It's kind of the price to pay to drive around with tinted windows in Alberta.

can't fight a tint ticket, there is no point. if it's over the limit then you can't do anything unless you have a medical condition from an optometrist.

Thanks for the advice. The ticket is $57 so im looking to put little or no effort into fighting it. I probably just request the evidence he has and go from there.

just get a a receipt showing you took off your tints. thats what the officer told me to do as he was writing my tint ticket

Usually 35% is fine in Ontario. At least that's what the tint shops say.....

you may want to look up their legal definition of tinted windows, it is different from what you think it is.

+1 so many individuals have no idea on the definition of "legal tint" for their province. Alberta: Highway Traffic Act 52(1)

Hey thanks Belarus, heres the legal.

52(1) Subject to this section, no person shall place or install in a
motor vehicle a transparent, translucent or opaque material on or in
place of the
(a) windshield glazing, or
(b) side window glazing that is beside or forward of the driver
on the right and left hand side of the motor vehicle.

I like magnetics idea of getting the receipt. Couldnt hurt to try.

Heres some information on Ontario, its not from legal type though, just a private website:

Ontario - For the driver’s compartment, right and left, no film can be installed that would substantially obscure visibility from the exterior. Behind the driver’s compartment, any film can be installed.

The explaination seems loose. Id be interested to know whats written in the actual legislation

Don't know if there is a similar forum for Alberta http://www.ontariohighwaytrafficact.com/, might want to try searching it for type of defense people used successfully to fight tint ticket

You're correct in Ontario it's pretty loose and based on cop's subjectivity when he charges you with Colour coating (window tint) offense. In Ontario if cop shows up for a trial date all he has to say from reading his notes: "Front driver's side window and/or front passenger side window has been coated/darkened to substantially obscure the interior of the motor vehicle when viewed from outside, contrary to Ontario HTA 73.3
