That might be true for the people in this forum who want to throw mods at the car afterwards.

Following the German threads on this closely, I believe the emphasis is indeed that they mainly hope to gain more power, which if compared with typical tunes is rather laughable. And I would still say that 2000 EUR (which is more or less the price you have to pay where I live) is too much for a bigger radiator and a more powerful fan.

that`s what I tried to point out before

people over here are way too conservative and are willing to pay a shitload of money for a few hp just to make sure it`s all done correctly by BMW and warranty is still provided

Please keep in mind that aftermarket tuners sometimes overestimate their power gains while BMW typically underestimates theirs. If we are lucky the actual HP and TQ gains from BMW may be similar to Dinan's, JB+ or the SSTT.

Buying a VK Motorwerks Oil Cooler for $695 and a VK/AA/Stett/Helix/RPI/etc FMIC for ~$1000 will yield much better cooling. Add in an oil catch can and you have yourself a much safer setup than this power kit.

But for the folks that want the OEM warranty...have fun spending $$.

i seriously doubt it. Dont think they upped the boost. Just refined the stock map with more power in the low/middle range. Basically the 740i map.

Can't wait to dyno it ! Extra bottom end of 50Nm at 1450RPM is not something any aftermarket tune can provide.

Excellent thought! Getting that torque at this low rpm is the true distinct attribute of the N54 engine.
I am not sure this was mentioned in this thread somewhere; but this kit brings a new ecu as well.

I plan to get this kit for several reasons. The price is reasonable (gulp!) at $1795 MSRP. The cooling hardware is pretty key for long term engine life if you run it hard. The software is doing more than increasing power. Early reports indicate this is more potent than conservative BMW press release stats. I think this may be an excellent, albeit pricey, base to start tuning from. Whether you intend to run a piggy or flash this kit should provide a lot more protection for your engine. Of course there are other mods that are also great to get like a bigger FMIC, DPs, catch can etc. But BMW Perf engine kit is high on my priority list.

I agree, but I think our modding philosophies are similar. I appreciate the fit and quality of OEM parts, as well as the ease with which you can go into the dealer. I plan on getting this kit as well, and enjoying the gains I receive (without any hassles).

That is not correct - at least not for the various flash tunes in Europe which also add more torque on the low end (even if peak torque is reached later). Please also bear in mind that the torque curve BMW claims has been done on an engine dyno and not measured on a car with all the mechanical losses and inconsistencies you get there. There was a long thread about this in one of the German forums, I think, where people stated that according to their dyno curves the 400 Nm claimed by BMW is not reached at such low revs at all.

No, you misunderstood. If you have the older DME (MDS80), then you need to buy the newer one (MDS81) in order to get the Performance Package. If you already have the new one (normally production date March 2008 and later), you don't need and will not receive a new DME.

Yes, buying a new MSD81 for those of us with older cars adds a lot to the price. And as nice as +50Nm at 1400 rpm would be, the curves I have seen do not achieve that much delta until 3k. But clearly the biggest increases in power are at low and mid-range rpm. The upper end is still clipped, presumably for reliability issues.

Did you see customer dynos of the power kit ? I only had a chance to see the official power curves where the max torque delta was at 1450RPM and the power was constant and didn't seem to drop at high RPM. If you are saying that the max torque does not arrive until 3000RPM, you can look at my dyno runs I did a few days ago where my stock car did 450Nm at the wheel at 1950RPM on a Mustang dyno (Terry from BMS said its a boost spike but nevertheless the car made it and also made 400Nm at the wheel after the spike).

Just got a quote from loacal dealer where I live (Canada). It's $2700.00 CAD plus the install, around 6 hours $700.00 CAD plus the 15% taxes, for 07 MSD80. Wich brings us to a screaming $3900.00 CAD in totall. Available in September.

The MSD80 kits are expensive because they require buying a new MSD81. My dealer suggested 3 hours labor. And there is a lot of mark up on this, hopefully Tischer can price this within reach of us mere mortals.

I agree, that the price will look better with time from US dealers. I doubt though it can be installed in 3 hours. Just look at all the parts they have to add and swap. Anyway, only time will tell.
