Carbon build up teaser
Sorry, not the type of teaser we're used to seeing on these forums but I thought I would start my own possible carbon build up thread. I have a 2010, I drive a little over 100 miles a day (98% highway/2% street). I usually drive 70 mph with the occasional burst for passing or merging. I will run it hard up to speed limit several times a week for those freeway on-ramps. My elevation change is 2000 feet round trip. I don't use fuel additives. The car has been running very smoothly until I got an SES light today on the way to work. On the way home, bringing it in to the dealership I thought I had mild loss of power. No vibrations. I was also getting about 500-550 miles per tank. I've had the following done:
SCR metering valve replaced at 20128 Campaign 13 03 10 (diesel programming) at 22606 Campaign 11E-A03 done at 73933 miles Faulty DEF tank sensor and supply module (replaced) at 107254 I may be jumping the gun with this most recent SES light but the mild loss of power is very concerning that this may be the beginning of the end. This could bode poorly for owners since my driving mix and high mileage had me feeling like I was going to avoid these problems. I'll keep you guys updated. |

That's a lot of miles.
How often do you use DS mode?

I'm always on manual shift mode like you, even in heavy traffic because personally I can't stand the more noticeable throttle lag on D mode. Maybe that's why my average range is 400-450 miles.

I use DS mode almost everyday. Whenever I'm merging or getting on the freeway. Sometimes I forget to take it off and then I realize why I've was enjoying my drive so much . I now have 116,XXX miles on my car. I pretty much never use manual mode.

My drive to work only has traffic if there is an accident. My drive home does have moderate traffic where I will have to come to a complete stop every so often and speeds are usually down around 20 mph in my traffic areas. I would say 30% of my drive home is in this type of traffic.

I think this could also be a possibility. It's a little more profound than my prior DPF regens. I have to say, after 70,000 miles or so I have not noticed the regens as much as I used to.

Even in heavy traffic? From a dead stop it's too jerky (with or without JBD). Could I be the only one? I'm only on DS mode when I'm cruising on the freeway and too lazy to use the manual shift mode like in the mornings when I'm grumpy and tired.

I guess I really have become "lazy". I used to use DS and manually shift more often at first. Now the only time I get out of D is at the track. Then I put it in DS and let'r rip. I only do manually shifting on the cool down lap.

Sounds like my wife's Forester; she gets about 250 miles on a tank. She drives less miles than I do, but I fill up about every three weeks in my 335d. Of course I am retired so that may account for some of that. But I put on 27k miles in 18 months, so it is not a garage queen because I go out and play a lot. She has less than half of that in her Forester.

Putting the motor under load has more benefits than higher RPMs. When I approach a hill, I give it throttle, but not enough to downshift. Make the motor work for its living.

Thanks for the insight. I have a lot of elevation change when I drive and I will take advantage of that. It's probably 50/50 that I would take it easy and try to save gas going uphill, but now I get up those grades quicker and guilt free!

Hopefully today. I can't believe they have been sitting on my car for a week now. I guess things get really slow around the holidays. I have a loaner though so I'm not complaining.
