Ipod Touch 5th Gen
Hi There!
I have a 2011 335i Touring and I have it working nicely playing music from my ipod 4th gen. I was considering the upgrade to a 5th Gen but wanted to know if it's compatible? I have it plugged into the centre console with a usb and stereo jackpoint and the ipod connector for the ipod end. Anyone able to shed light? I want no less functionality than I have now. I don't need movies nor want them. I want to be able to control the ipod from the system, and see track, artists, playlists etc... Thanks for any assistance. |

Yes, used the white Apple USB cable from centre console USB port to my iPod touch 5G.
Functions identical to my iPhone 4 + cable.

I apologize for being dense, but which white cable? The new lightning cable or something else? The cable I am using is a black cable with an IPOD Connector on one end and usb and 3.5mm stereo (Both of which have to be connected) for the rest.

Yes the new Apple issued lightning cable only.
The iPod shows up under CD/Multimedia on the iDrive system as a USB connected device. However, it might be dependent on your vehicle's options. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=758527 might help since the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5G have the same connector and you are using it as a music source.

Would this connector work? Will I still need the audio Cable?

The adapter should work, but not sure about 3rd party ones.
Why not just use the USB cable that comes with the iPod 5 Touch or get another cable? Since your car is a 2011, like mine, don't think you need the y-cable set up.

Well I got said adapter and it shows as "reading" and then "not connected". I tried to use the USB Cable and got "not supported on the BMW Console!"

Hmm, I know there isn't official iPhone 5 / iPod Touch 5g support at BMW, but maybe bring it in the dealership so they can trouble shoot.
Can you pair it via bluetooth and stream music? Just a thought....

Apparently the unit installed is a MULF High Electronics. It has a USB and 3.5mm connection which has a Y plug adapter which I have been plugging into my Ipod Touch 4 with no issue, but the 5 won't work either soley with USB > Lightning or via an adapter to the existing Y adapter.
Any ideas? |

If you have a MULF unit, you MUST use the Y-cable! If you have a combox, you can use the original apple cable.
Try this before you buy the newest ipod. plug the ipod 4th gen using the apple "white" cable (this one would be the large adapter one). IF it works, then you can do the same thing with the 5th gen ipod. If the ipod only works with the BMW Black Y Cable, then you will need to use a y-cable as well. I believe if you put the 30 pin to lightning adapter on the Bmw black y cable, it should work as well but don't quote me on that. I just leave my iphone 4 in the car as a dedicated ipod now.

Best to hold off on the upgrade. For music playback purposes, keep the iPod Touch 4 (good enough).

Y adapter for G5 iPod Touch
Works with my iPod Touch G4 but DIdn't work my iPod Touch G5.
April 2013: My 'no nothing usually' BMW dealer 'techs' said they (BMW) 'haven't Upgraded to G5 yet'! Wrong, Techos,!! 5/8/13: I purchased an Apple OEM 30pin to lightning adapter and now my ipod G5 works w this Y adapter (which is not BMW OEM) in my 2010 BMW 3281 convertible. -the cheapo non OEM 30pin to lightning adapter didn't work! I had a 4S using the Y-cable. When I got an iPhone 5S I just bought the lightning converter: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Lightnin...htning+adaptor
It works! |
