N54 oil mishap

Hi

Just had an oil service done and they used castrol 5w30 magnatec fully synthetic instead of egde. They have offered to replace it FOC but wanted to find out if this oil will be ok before i pull the trigger.

Thanks
Imsy

I run 5w30 in my 335i and its fine.

As long as it's LL04 approved I wouldn't worry

Magnatech is not ll04 though is it.

Id have it changed...

And as said the viscosity is fine it's the spec which is wrong.

Look at Opie Oils website.
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-686-bmw-longlife-04.aspx

It looks ok.
I seem to remember, question has been raised on here before.

Try a search?

Opieoils website has the magnatec c3 on there but castrols own website doesnt recommend it.

I did do a search couldnt find anything difinitive.

Whilst the garage will replace it FOC just dont wanna put them out since they normally do a good job at serious mates rates.
I usually provide my own oil but didnt on this occasion and theh just put in what Eurocarparts gave them based on my reg number.

Well it depends which specific Magnatec they used.

I use Magnatec in mine. At a heavier 5w40 for better cooling of a tuned car.

I'd run the oil for 6 months OP if you're worried and then change it. Unless it is LL-04 in which case you are good.

In the UK BMW went for 0w-30 but when you look at the specs that can be used it's fairly wide as AWSAS has stated 5w-40 in certain cases though not endorsed say by BMW when you buy oil for the dealerships can be used, when I see the spec charts st work for oils that can be used it's more climate specific than anything else colder hotter climates highlight different 'headline spec' oils but as we are in the UK 0 or 5 w spec is fine, the use of Magnetic over Edge isn't ideal ideally it'll of been edge but Magnetic oils could have the sameish qualities say as you sticking Triple QX oil in fir Euro's but as long as it's on the LL04,spec shouldn't be a longterm drama

According to a chart I've seen 0w is good for down to -35C and 5w is good for -30C. The day it reaches -35C in the UK I'll consider changing my oil.
