Oil Level
Hi,
currently having an issue with my condition based service info. I want to check my oil level sensor is reading correctly. This value like the brakes reads from a sensor. I'm currently showing MAX in Idrive for oil level. As far as I understand it the Idrive scale is only reading the final 1 litre of oil in the engine. i.e. minimum would mean 1 litre short of the 8.8 litres it holds. My Carly app shows the values below. I can't find any info on the 'Raw' value apart from on an M3 which might be different. Can anyone else please check their oil level (on an e92 335i preferably although e9x probably have similar values) with the carly app in parameters and post up what they see? I'd like to see if others have a raw value similar to mine. I hope I really am at 86%. It's only been 2 months since I changed my oil but I have been doing some spirited driving. Thanks

Russel pointed out to me ours hold 6.5 litres. I was reading an M3 forum. They seem to hold 8.8.
Anyway please anyone let me know what readings you get. Thanks

I usually run 110 to 120C. So it's normal for my car anyway.

Seems pretty hot to me, unless you were spanking it.
Driving normally, the water to oil heat exchanger should keep the oil temperature very close to the coolant temp, ie about 90c. Given the temperture sensor and level sensor are usually the same part, i'm just wondering if the two are linked... Unusually high oil temperature and unusually high oil level... |

Unfortunately don't have Carly so can't help with level (but this is why I HATE that there's no proper manual dipstick to check the damn level myself).
As for the temp, yeah completely normal as even when cruising it rises quite high.

I thought lots of people had this adaptor and app. Just need at least one for comparison. Level also reads 74mm of oil. Again. No idea how many mm is full. It drops as low as 45mm on a 45 degree decline. It really irritates me as even when idrive is fine the gauge is so hit and miss. Park on a hill for a while and it can give you a red warning. One dy it can be 75% full, next day 100%. A dipstick would be fool proof. I have water and oil temp monitoring on my jb4 now. It's quite amazing how quickly water tem can drop by moving at 60mph+ from the air flow over the radiator. My car is nearly a constant 115 and always has been. Thrash it and that goes to 120C. My AITs are still often 30C so no problems. From what I read our engines operate best in the 110C+ range.

Hopefully somebody who's done an oil change very recently can check on the ODB port what values they see with the Carly BMWhat app.

It really is a ridiculous state of affairs that they've removed the dipstick. I dont get the continual insistence on making things more complicated for no reason.
Having a level sensor is useful, as many folk wont check the oil as they should. But they then make the leap that because they've fitted some complex sensing equipment into a nice hostile environment, they can then get rid of the stupid-simple dipstick that we've been using for about 100 years. Also means that when doing an oil change, you need to get in the bloody car, with your manky oily hands, and turn it on to get a reading.... |
