M5 Accident

'More than 10 people are feared to have died and 43 are injured after 27 vehicles collided - many bursting into flames - on the M5 in Somerset.'

Horrific tragedy, thoughts go out to all those families affected. It could so easily happen to any one of us.

indeed, tragic for all those involved. And perhaps a moment for us all to reflect on how we drive in all weather conditions, how aware we are, and how cautious we are.

It will be interesting to know what the cause of this crash was, but no doubt keeping lane discipline and distance is a lesson to be learnt - it is a serious problem on UK motorways.

Indeed, terrible. There will be lots of rumour and speculation. Time will tell what the cause was .... but it will take a long time to sort !

I deal with this stuff as my job and I don't think for this one I would know where to start !!

As a police officer it is like one of those table top exercises on a course where you get told "you are first on scene, state your actions" .... except this was very real .....

The Police have confirmed 7 deaths, but are expecting that number to increase as they start to move the lorries that crushed cars as they collided, and ended up on top of the cars!

Awful accident with lots of speculation as to what caused it.

The most plausible reason that I've read came from a Guy who is working as a temp for TNT, and posted the following:

This is how it happened:
A slow moving vehicle/s failed to give way to a truck at the end of the slip road.
The truck will have taken avoiding action, either braking, or changing lanes.
Other drivers following the truck will have been unaware/indifferent to the developing situation.
First contact will have been made between any of these vehicles.
All vehicles involved in the primary incident will have braked.
Secondary vehicles are unable to stop in time.

I am privy to some info about the aftermath, but better not to air it here. Suffice to say, some drivers did stop in time.

If you look at the pics at the accident scene, the slip road (mentioned above) can be seen in the background.

Thoughts must be with those involved, and the people who have lost loved ones,blame/cause is for later on.

Just on my doorstep. Awful tragedy. Could have been any one of us, we use that stretch of motorway reguarly.

Terrible tradgedy, I also use that stretch a fair bit.
There was another big crash last night, 11 vehicles on the M6, thankfully no one killed.

Just coincidence that the first proper fog of the year has been around?
I do think the standard of driving and level of people's attention on the roads in this country is appaling

You should try driving in Ireland, cars dont seem to come with factory fitted indicators.

Just shows how fragile our cars can be...terrible, RIP those poor people.

One thought, I have been meaning to buy these for our cars for ages. Suppose you doors got jammed shut, how would you get out...smash the back window? Car Hammer

It's a very good idea and they can be bought very cheaply.
I think every car should carry one where it can be instinctively found should the worst happen.
The accounts of people unable to get everyone out of their cars before being overwhelmed by fire show that survival could be a split second thing.
