335i exhaust flap seem to be open all the time

Hi everyone

1st off I know there's the 'golf tee mod' or 'unplug that wire behind the tail light mod', but I was wondering if there's a software setting for it in the ECU?

The reason I ask was that I noticed my car's flap seem to be open all the time, I know it hasn't malfunctioned and stuck open because when you 1st start the car up when cold the flap is closed (water vapour only comes out from one exhuast), after about 20 seconds of warming up, I can hear a metal rattling sound for a couple of seconds and the flap opens (can feel exhaust gas coming from both sides).

And then it seems to be stuck open the entire time, from reading on the forum I thought the flap is suppose close at lower rpm/low throttle to reduce noise and only open up when you hit over a certain rpm, but because of this I get a noticable engine drown when driving ~80-110km/h, which makes it sound like I'm driving around with an aftermarket exhaust (like my Skyline, just not as loud).

It seems to started after I got it serviced and the shop mentioned they updated the software as my car had a very old version, so I thought maybe they coded the flap to stay open all the time? (if there's even such an option) I read that the lastest JB4 there's an option to turn the flap on all the time, so I thought maybe theres a setting for it in the main ECU?

Only other thing I can think off is that, the oil used was changed (from Fosch Titan 10w40 to Shell 10w40, both are BMW LL01 approved), however I doubt that has anything to do with increased engine drown noise I'm currently experiencing driving ~freeway speed.

Otherwise the car drives the same.

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers.

Car is booked in for a carbon clean & fixing a minor oil leak where the hose from the external oil cooler joins the oil filter housing, so I might double check with them then.

i thought 'golf tee mod' IS the 'unplug that wire behind the tail light mod' ?

im pretty sure you can code the can flaps to be open so it may have been done with the software update. who did the update for you ?

It's completely normal. It's a result of the software update.

When the car was new, mine used to be closed all the time unless you went WOT. Back in 2009 in after a software update, the exhaust flap is closed upon cold start for about 30 sec them it opens and stays open.

I am catless DP's with stock cat back and IMO sounds perfect. It gets rid of the obnoxious cold start and then opens at the right time after the cold start quick heat cycle. You get the best of both worlds.

You must be full catless if you are getting drone.

Cheers for the reply guys,

German auto service did the update during the service.

Today I got the dreaded "Engine fault, reduced power" code on dash, while I was leaving work... very long cranks, followed by idling rpm going all over the place; looks like my HPFP went belly up...

On the bright side, this was the original pump at ~95000km.

On the down side, there goes my tax returns...

I've also upgraded my software from 09 to the latest one (I'm guessing) last year. I haven't noticed that the exhaust note was louder until I went catless but keeping the secondary cats. It gurgles a bit now as well.

Where and what's the cost of getting a carbon cleanup if you don't mind me asking?

Was @ Ramp Auto Group, quoted ~$500 for it.

Went back to driving the Skyline as a daily in the meantime & it feels bloody slow compared to the 'German Taxi'...
