How to get BMW to change your oil under warranty?

Hey guys long story short i 2 days ago i purchased a 2008 CPO 335i and when i got the car home and pulled into the driveway(steep incline) 2-3 oz of oil dripped out onto my driveway and it freaked me out but i needed to drive out to santa barbara the next day for school. So today i dropped my car off at BMW of SB and told them of the incident and just wanted to get the car checked out. better safe than sorry. i also told the the service guy that the oil that leaked out was a really really dark brown color, like the oil was really burnt. he replied with the same ole, the car had an oil change at 15,000 miles (car is at 18k) and the next oil change should be at 30,000.

He also proceeded to say that they use synthetic oil that stays a amber honey color so the oil should not look burnt at all. I just told him to take a look at it and change if its needed and i saw him write down "dark colored oil"

Now i was thinking that i want to call in the morning and convince them to change my oil since there is no dipstick for me to check the condition of the oil. Can i ask them for a sample of the oil if they refuse to change it? basically im looking for what i need to say to get a premature (according the the 15k intervals) oil change?

i almost feel like its worth it to pay to have them do the oil change. can i take it somehwere else to change the oil and still not void the warranty ?

Color of oil has nothing to do with it's lubricating ability.

If you are concerned, take it to an independent BMW shop and get the oil and filter changed. Think of it as cheap insurance on your new car. You should run intermediate oil changes anyway. The 15-18K oil service interval is for BMW's benefit, not yours!

Or buy a filter and some oil and change it yourself.

Confirmed. They also don't reset the CBS at low mileage changes. So if the computer says 8000 miles left and its been over a year, they will change it, then you can change it again in 8000 miles when the car says it needs to be done.

Correct. But also, oil will look very dark the second you put it in there and drive a few miles. If it was just a couple of drops, don't worry so much over it. The car holds many quarts - a few drops doesn't effect anything.

yea i always did my own oil changes on the s4 but i didnt want to accidentally void th warranty. Also i just bought this car and its still under warranty and the oil is too dark for my liking. specially if it only has 3,000 miles on it. Why pay for something that you shouldnt have to?? get what im saying? i like to get what is owed to me. im just going to call in the morning and ask for the oil to be changed, i like to have the peace of mind since i drive my car hard.

You're not owed anything. The car comes with scheduled maintenance. They performed the last oil change at 15k, as the schedule dictates. If you want it done more often, you need to DIY or pay up.

If you change it your self, or go to a different shop, obtain a sample of the oil. If warranty issues crop up, you can always have the oil tested for metal etc...

just pay to get it done if you dont wnat to do it youself. take it to mr. lube or equivalent in the US. scheduled maintenance is just that...SCHEDULED. anything outside of the schedule, you pay for yourself.

hahah you guys crack me up. I just purchased a CPO 335i and when i got home it leaked black oil all over my driveway and you are telling me that they don't owe me anything. you have got to be kidding me. The oil does not look like it is 3k miles old, this damn BMW runs soo hot that it seems like a good idea to have clean oil in the car. half of you guys sound like you have a stick up your ass. calm down. Thanks to the others for the the advice. And finally, Takashi, go drive your hybrid and get the hell out of here with the punctuation crap. I attend UCSB and have to punctuate correctly when i write essays but not on the internet. Just curious to see where you were educated?

Your car should not leak oil, period.

There is a problem with it that would be covered under CPO warranty, book it in and have it fixed. You're had it 2 days - I would ask them why this wasn't identified during the inspection, and question what else might have been missed - I'd rattle the salespersons cage on that, and get a free oil change that way.

Steep driveway: my guess head cover gasket.
