That was just a cut and paste from a document sent by BMW NA to Dealer Service Managers

Makes me kind of sad reading this knowing how many improvements went into the the N52Kp vs the original N52 and that's only after less then 2 yrs or so. Makes the N52 seems obsolete, almost like they rushed the N52 to get it out the door and improvement is an after thought...

The N52 (First version) was not rushed out. It was in the 630i since 2004 (if I remembered correctly) outside Canada and the USA.

Correct...September 2004 (a few months after the 645Ci).

So the N52 was being produced for a full 18 months
before being changed to the N52KP in the E92 Coupe.

So in another word, US customers got the shaft by getting something near its 1st version cycle

USA was first to get the N52KP, as the 328i
Reason being BMW NA only wanted 2 engines, and 325i was too underpowered compared to 335i and 330i to near

Rest of the world have only started getting the N52KP asof April 2007 in areas outside europe that arnt getting the N53 Direct injection yet due to fuel requirements.

So N52 has been in full production for over 2,5 years and still remains in a production for a few models such as the 130i

Not really.
My point was that it was closer to its beginning rather than its end when it debuted here in the U.S. Besides, I don't find the differences in the chart from E90Fleet to be so dramatic anyway, except for maybe the connecting rods. Its more or less the same engine....

Yes, they are very small changes

Rods were just changed because the Direct Injection N53 neeed the new ones, and to keep costs down they share the part

could a 328i use the software from the z4 3.0si and the 3 stage intake manifold to be converted to the high output version. I would like to do this.

1) Its very difficult ( eg how are you going to control the extra intake motors ? )
2) Its very expensive
3) not all 328i have N52, SULEV models have N51

There are many many many threads bout upgrading, especially ones asking about US 325i to 330i, which is a similar change

Well i dont understand lol.
1.) Wouldnt the software control the extra intake motors,
2) I could purchase a 335 instead but I like the responsiveness of the NA engine and It feels lighter to me. So as long as the parts are not in excess of 2k should be fine. And couldnt the z4 3.0si software just be flashed onto my current ecu assuming I had a tech to do it for me.
3. I live in Virgina so it would be a ulev and not sulev

Isn't BMWNA oblidged to tell customer that he/she is getting SULEV with N51 and not ULEV with N52?

How do we know which engine our car has? I'm guessing there's a serial number on the block somewhere? Don't the 335i's use the N54 engine? So I guess I have nothing to worry about? Am I being paranoid enough yet?

E90Fleet and others

I drove a 2007 328i non-SULEV today for comparison and I must say SULEV pick up is not as good as the regular 328i.

So In fact N52 is better engine than N51

Thank you for your highly detailed, scientific reasoning.
