Red scarf
what lens are you using here and is this with your 1dx? if so, the dynamic range is freaking mind blowing!

Sweet! I love the 20D. I still have mine, but it's been collecting dust lately.

Thanks. Yeah, the 1D X with the EF 50mm f/1.4, just with natural light. I attended a natural light portraiture workshop yesterday, and this was one of the shots I came up with. Just in time for this contest, since I usually never shoot portraits.

I actually shot two versions of this picture. One 2.8 and this one at 5.6. This one is the one that caught my eye. The DOF was very shallow in 2.8 and I was loosing a lot of detail in the hairs. I wanted to get at least the whole head in focus.

I got plenty of shots in 2.8 on my 500px account

hehe niice! I finally upgraded to a 5D Mark III so mine is now collecting dust too haha! upgrade had to happen since I am going into wedding photography.

yeah portraiture work can be pretty intimidating at times; its a whole other beast =P I got into portraits back in high school cause a friend in my art class said so-and-so took better pictures than me cause they can shoot people. I made it my mission to learn how to shoot people and for the past 6 years I've been doing nothing else but that hahaha! I do miss landscaping at times but I just dont have the time to travel at the moment. But when you find that sweet spot paired with the right lens, you learn so much more about how your glass affects the proportions of the person in front of the camera. It takes time but you can shoot anything if you put enough effort into it

I got my own space for that. Everything I buy have to be storable so there's nothing in the way. Starting to build a little home studio since I just learned that there's a bun in the oven

I'm not flashing in her face too much so she doesnt get fed up with it. But I LOVE my D800 for that; crank up the iso and done.

But lets not forget she's the one waiting after me when I find interesting things to shoot when we walk or go visit stuff; she's even the one going to pickup my packages at the post office multiple times a week since I work too much and end my days after the post office closing time...so in a way or another, I owe her.

Its a matter of give and take; really. I test my gear out, She's got a new facebook profile pic every week; feels pretty, receives compliment all the time; everybody wins!

Happy wife; happy life!

Same here. Except the occasional-pic-that-stays-online-about-2-minutes-just-enough-so-Chewy-can-grab-a-copy.

I want to work on my OCF and portraits this winter since there wont be that much photo op as I would like to. I started with some stands, umbrellas, softboxes and two YN560 II. So I would like to see more of your stuff and getsome critiques on my portraits shots as well.

Considering to buy some alienbee strobes eventually if I can justify.

Red scarf
as you requested, sir:
framing overall: when there is more space between the back of the head and the frame edge than there is between the nose and the frame edge, this creates a sense of tension in the subject. could be very desirable if the subjects faces matches this. however, she has a very calm/serene look to her with a very slight smile. even though her mouth doesn't show the slight smile, her eyes do.

subject posture: her hunch-over doesn't lend well to her stature and increases the overweightness look. she looks very much posed because her whole body seems to be hugging the tree. if caught in this intent naturally, there would be a sense of pushing off or look back the other way. she's got shoulders and body and head all leaning into the tree but she is looking away from the tree. it would look very different if one or some of these were opposite - shoulders pointing away, for example. this would help make it look unposed/natural.

framing/lines: you have some nice framing/balance. the trees vertical lines in the back ending at the centered horizon complement the slant from edge to edge across the frame created by the tree trunk and the subject's back. it's very well balanced. further emphasized by the darker exposure of the green leaves in the upper left corner. again, nice balance.

Thanks rodi (for not being too harsh).

Your first point in framing is new to me. I didn't realize that. I'll play around with some more cropping and compositional aspects in my other photos and see if that observation of yours holds. I agree with your posture comments though. I thought about it the same way, that she's far too hunched over.

So, I guess I didn't completely blow it, and it was a decent first try? If you don't mind, and if you can spare a couple more minutes of your time, can you comment on a couple others from the same shoot? I can PM you the photos if you want.
