Muffler delete
http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=DOcka7AjUb8 ---> cold start
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=c8KQ5h516EM ---> quick rev I presonally don't understand why people go do a muffler delete and complain that it's too loud. Obviously it's going to make a lot of sound, you're removing mufflers! There is a tiny bit of drone but after 1 week you can't hear anything. If you play music you won't be hearing any drone at all! Also there is a slight rattle in the rear center console slidding compartment of the car, you stuff it with a tshirt and close it. You won't hear a single thing! I love my muffler delete and it pops just like popcorn! I feel some backpressure so i'm thinking of putting some kittyless dp's soon when vrsf comes out with their dp's for xdrive!

Which goes against what Sered said, that there ISN'T any packing on the driver's side... So I wonder in his vid, if he's really removed most of the packing in the pass side only, or driver's side too... |

So i dropped off my OEM mufflers yerterday at the muffler shop and im doing what tomz recommended to them. *replacing all perforated piping with ss non perforated piping. *leaving the small resonator thats inside the driver side muffler. *removing half the packing. Im too busy for the next couple of days but im planning to go by on Wednesday to get them installed. I will post videos of my current set up of Magnaflows with DPs, my old set up of the OEM mufflers with DP's and the new modded OEM mufflers. Wish me luck!

I think thats about it. Nothing else...except that if you arent removing the driver side internals, there is no packing in there so you may be able to get away with only opening and modifying the passenger side.

I'm not sure why my driver-side muffler didn't have packing, but it didn't. I've been trying to get verification on that because I found it very odd; and I've been repeatedly mentioning that mine may not be normal. I had 75% of packing removed from the passenger side, that's it. FWIW, the car is sounding better over time, I'm guessing the packing is getting settled back. With my spark plugs replaced, the car pulls like a freight train and sounds AWESOME at WOT. The entire exhaust note changes.

On the driver side, if I remember correctly, there is only that mini muffler with no packing. So you probably dont need to open it.

So i just got off the phone with the muffler guy and he will replace all three perforated pipes with SS solid pipes however he recommended that i keep all the packing material inside the muffler.
So now i am... *Keeping all the packing inside the mufflers. *replacing all three perforated pipes with SS solid ones *leaving everyting else as is.

Of those with no packing on the drivers side were all of them e92s?

Perhaps, in addition to the resonated xpipe, that’s another difference between the e90 and e92 exhausts.
For those that were interested. I took out all the packing but left the perforated pipe intact. I'm welding it up right now so expect a video to follow in the next few days (most likely this weekend).

Perforated pipes allow the sound waves to escape, packing absorbs them.
Without perforation, it IS essentially a muffler delete, and without packing, the perforation doesn't really serve much of a purpose. I personally think removing 50-75 % of the packing and leaving the perforation intact is the best thing to do. Anyway looking forward to the outcome of your method. |

I'll take some video later but initial reaction is so-so. Cold start up is noticeably louder and I was a little worried it was going to be too loud at first. But when I'm just cruising around town it actually doesn't sound much louder than stock. It's a bit louder when you get on it but not a dramatic difference IMHO. If I was going to do it again I would probably cover half the perforations.

Also as a side note. I was amazed at how much water came out of the mufflers. The packing was soaked and before I cut them open I stood them up in the driveway to let the water drain out and there was enough in them to leave a stream all the way to the street...
