I'm just curious because it seems to be a very large & successful business, but doesn't brand it's ownership anywhere. Wonder if its owned by one person or a consortium

it doesn't take that much to run a forum, i know that sites like bfc and fatwallet were personally owned for years, though they may have sold to corporations down the line.

i actually worked on starting my own forum a few years ago (never launched but i learned a bit). vbulletin costs around $20, the rest is configuration/setup. you can host it on a single computer for a while (as long as thousands of people aren't banging at it every minute). a forum such as this one... i estimate a single solid home-based server with fast internet could handle.

iirc, bfc (which gets more traffic than here) is run by 2 people: mdabney (owner) and kevlar (sysop)

Also there is no way this website runs on a single home based server. If it did, this post would take you 10 minutes to access. I would imagine they have a colocated or leased rack with multiple dedicated web and database servers with additional load balancers. Also vbulletin licenses cost $300+ not including upgrades/heavy modification which this set of forums definitely has (iPhone app, seamless horizontal access among multiple forums.) I previously owned and sold a web hosting & data center company so I know what it takes to run a heavy set of forums like this well.

Also I know of conglomerates who went on forum buying sprees in the mid 2000s and wouldn't be surprised it it was purchased by a larger corporation. Just curious to know who it is...
