50:50 mix wouldn't be a good idea without engine and fuel system modifications - e85 eats into rubber so fuel pipes will need to be upgraded, by using e85 you may have required bigger injectors as you use more e85 than gasoline as stoich for E85 is 9:1, e85 also has less cleaning additives than gasoline so you could suffer from heavy oil breather deposits on the injectors etc - the list goes on really. Btw I know this useless information (seeing as E85 is no longer available on forecourts) because I was a part of a team who developed the Bentley W12 engine to run on E85.

Yeah it was about 10p more - Morrisons was the main forecourt supplier for it. Currently cars are ok to run with up to 10% ethanol with no changes - anything above that would certainly cause issues. There was a big hype about E85 a couple of years ago however that hype has now died in the uk.
