Road Trip - Service Engine Soon - Hesitation

2011 Stock - 35k Miles (US Car); believe I'm up to date with recalls or campaign's as they call them.

I've had more than my fair share of BMW shop time since ownership...finally thought i was in the clear; no troubles the last 12 months or so...however, took a 6 hour trip yesterday and as soon as i parked the SES light came on, no biggie it's happen plenty; but this time it's followed by low RPM hesitation/motor vibration. I did a quick search on this forum and didn't find too much info other than likely cause = emissions.

Starting to consider extended warranty...

Anyone have any thoughts on common culprit?

Do you have the wherewithal to check the codes that might have resulted? Unfortunately it seems like a required accessory is a code reader and a code glossary.

I used a cheap Craftsman code reader to find the cause of a SES light which was emissions related. I was traveling in traffic at a 4000 ft+ elevation and it popped on. I was able to clear it. It was $60 (on sale at the time). Good luck.

Reductant Level Sensor Circuit

Cylinder 2 fuel injector offset learning at minimum limit...this seems to be the cause of the rough low rpm performance; sounds like the injector will need to be replaced.

Could even be the DDE software pertaining to the injectors. Tell your SA about it being a well known issue. They'll replace your injector first either way.

I had the same code, hesitation at low RPM and injector keep failing. Injector #2 was replaced twice. The third time, the dealer opened a PUMA case. The dealer was instructed to reprogram the car (including CAS) with new level: E89X-12-07-508

Since this reprogram (2/21/2013), I did not get a SES light. However, about 2-3 weeks ago I got a Engine malfunction yellow light and the car went in limp mode. After turning OFF the engine the light did turn OFF. SA told me that if the light is OFF there is not much they can do. Except for this limp mode that surprised me (car has no power at all), everything seems OK for now.

My car is still under warranty until Nov 2013. I do not have an extended warranty. I am planning to get the powertrain extended warranty before Nov.

Same here...but I might hit 40k miles before that. If I understand it correctly, I can buy extended warranty from any dealer; any particular one that is consistently better priced?

What's the ball park price for power train warranty? Does that include emissions?

If getting an extended warranty, I recommend spending a bit more and get the platinum warranty, especially if you have navigation. Some of the electronics inside the car can be pretty pricy if they go bad which would not be covered by a powertrain only warranty.

Just for starters you can get the max platinum (100K miles, 7 years) for something like $3500. Believe it is essentially the same as the factory warranty (won't cover things like a battery, wear and tear on seats, etc). Yes it can be had for less by shopping around.

You can find the coverage at: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...rotection.aspx

Extended warranties are a gamble. Previously, I got the extended warranty for a Honda and a Mazda and never collected any money. So far, my problem with the 335d has been all related to fuel system, emission components and computer software. My car does not have iDrive, this is why I am considering the Powertrain 7Y 100K miles warranty.

I got a very good price from Daniel at Pacific BMW (I think they are a forum sponsor): danieldutton@pacificbmw.com

Thanks

So are we saying if we come up with specifically an injector #2 error, it most likely is NOT the injector?

So, the hesistation was less noticable (cured?) on the way home; with two stops; one a drive thru.

5:48hr
417mi
32.6mpg
75.1mph

Any chance this could have been some dirty fuel that hung an injector open or someting and all is good again? Strange that every seems to have this issue with #2; something special about cylinder #2?

My local stealership sucks at working on my car...so I'm hesistant to have them change an injector; but against my better judgement I'll call them have them scan the codes and make a decision.

Hmmm. High altitude, huh?! I drive at basically sea level now. But I have a summer trip in August planned that will take me up in the Rockies. By then I should have about 17-18k on the vehicle. I had all the recalls done relatively early in the car's life, so we shall see if this adds any more data to the mix.

Just a little update...SES turned off by itself, car back to normal. I'm starting to wonder if it was just some trashy diesel.

Good to hear. I hope all is well.

It sucks BMW says not to use additive in the fuel because sometimes I feel the fuel needs help. We almost have to get a sample of fuel & test at each fill up to be safe. Probably my #1 complaint vs. unleaded.

My fill up to head home (days after SES) I filled up at a Shell that had 5 or 10% biodiesel. That was the first time I ever saw that.

I might try some cleaner and booster...this was the first stumbling I've felt in 37k miles.

Still on fence about extended warranty. 3 more years or 30k - 60k more miles; hmmm...about another $3/day or $0.09 - $0.05 per mile
