Downpipes for the d...

Is anyone stateside working on downpipes for the d?

I would think this would be far easier to design/implement than an exhaust set-up. I came across an old post by Andrew at AR Design, he mentioned something about working on this back in March of 2010. I sent him an e-mail today to see if he's made any progress.

I would love some exhaust note on the D, but i'm not sure we'll ever see anything due to the low number of diesel drivers, and even lower number of those interested in modding their cars. That and the Urea Solution scares many

Why not to buy some dedicated exhaust like Eisenmann, Sebring or Bastuck ?

Nothing available in the US that I'm aware of. Europeans can get exhaust systems for the 335d because they don't have to deal with the exhaust fluid system... yet.

I like the car being quiet though, it's a real sleeper. Besides, a straight-6 diesel with a loud exhaust would sound like a semi truck anyway.

Spoke with Andrew at AR Design and they have not come up with downpipes for the d yet. I think part of their trouble is that they cannot find a volunteer in Colorado. I am trying to see if they would consider coordinating something with an east coast shop/fabricator in which case I would volunteer my car.

Anyway, Andrew did share with me they are now selling the ESS Direct Flash tune for the 335d. It's a handheld programmer, so not only does actually reflash the ECU the tune is reversable. This is an interesting development since the last time I conversed with ESS their tune was not available for US spec diesels. 55hp gains. I have an e-mail into ESS to confirm that this tune is in fact available for US cars.

If this is true, this would amount to a nice advancement in the area of true "tuning" options for the d.

Here's the tune...

Can the tune be used in conjunction with JBD? In my Audi, had the GIAC flash and went with bigger injectors. Would this be similar?

once my d is out of warranty and i can still pass emissions even with a sim I'd be up for it.

So what is Andrew selling then? Is it the flash from ESS that has to be installed by a shop or are they not selling any ESS tune?

Not stateside but, I did find this:

I wouldn't imagine the physical fitment to be too much of an issue. However, getting the ECU to play nice without a DPF could be another story.

Andrew isn't selling a tune for the d. I guess he misspoke... I thought it was odd when he stated that he selling the ESS direct flash tune for the d because i've been conversing with the guys at ESS US over the last year regarding the availability of their tune for the US spec diesel.

Going to see the custom exhaust fabricators tomorrow so they can put the car up on a lift to see what they are dealing with at which point they will let me know what our options are. They seem pretty optimistic they can do something for our d's.

That said, after further research I suspect without the coding to do a dpf and or urea delete exhaust options will be limited. Given where the DPF is located DP's appear out of the question without dpf tuning delete. Not sure exactly if the urea injection occurs down stream or up stream or where the nitrogen oxide sensor is in the exhaust stream, which would then determine if we would be limited to just a midpipe or midpipe and back exhaust. Hope to find out more tomorrow.

That BIG can in the lower left corner is the DPF.

Great meeting today. Plan to drop the d off next week after I dyno so they can fabricate a custom stainless steel exhaust. Weight savings are expected to be approx 20lbs, not sure what kind of performance gains there will be, but I expect something since will be going from a cramped 2 to 2.5" pipe to 3.5", maybe 5hp to 8hp. Not messing with the dpf or urea or the cats since they are all tied into one another and the ecu.

Will create a new post with pics and video after everything is done!
