Im in Highbury at the moment, some shops are shuttering up due to gangs of scum roaming the streets.

Most of my office has left, attempting to get home safely. Those living in South London were noticeably scared .... one lady was shakeing.

FFS

Sirens going off everywhere.

Just heard my office is being closed as is the entire street.

This whole thing is a cluster fuck. PM says "these people will be brought to justice" but what good is that going to do? It's not a deterrent to most and all it will do is clog up the courts and cost the tax payer even more money.

It's about time someone tried to address the problem of why we live in a society with so many people willing to commit crime like this. It's because they have nothing to loose and even the worst punishment is probably more like a holiday.

Firstly, if a drug dealer was shot, good! They kill enough anyway,

Secondly, all the looters should have their fingers chopped off like in Saudi Arabi!

I get the exact same feeling. No deterrent whatsoever. Leaves the door open to mindless copycats.

From all the interviews with the "rioters" it seems they are knarked that they don't get respect. I must be old skool ... but respect is earned. And going in a mob to rob shops is a complete fail on that part.

Listen to this : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14458424

Listenening to those brain-dead girls explain "how much fun it is", and it is all the governments fault (little discussion between themselves to determine it was the Conervatives fault) and they don't care about all the buisnesses because "they is rich" makes me seeth.

Blame society. "Oh we are all ill-done to ... woe is us ... " Always blaming others.

Good old fashioned, sharp, kick up the arse is required.

I dont know if theres something wrong with the colour on my TV as Ive just seen Boris Johnson talking to a group of about 200 who have turned up to clean the streets voluntarily. They seem to be a completely different shade to those who were on last night looting and lighting fires. Must get the TV serviced.

^ Too good for them!

Complete pond life the lot of them. I remember the riots from the 80s and how they spread across the country - deja vu! It's time our government untied the coppers hands from behind their back and gave them the powers, and equipment to deal with this correctly. Only those doing something wrong and the bleeding heart, do gooding, tree huggers will complain if water cannons are used. I for one wil see it as quality, not to be missed TV!

I remember that despite many criticisms levelled at the US authorities after the Mississippi floods, they stopped looting and lawlessness at the drop of a hat by announcing that looters would simply be shot on sight.

Our incredibly resilient, no-nonsense, home secretary believes that water cannon is too harsh for them.

I despair.

It would probably be the first bath of the year for a lot of them.

To be honest I have little faith in the regular Polices ability to deal with this type of situation even if they declared the gloves off so to speak. BBC footage this morning of riot police trying to charge at a crowd was comical. Half the police ran in the wrong direction.

Therein lies the problem, a softly softly approach won't work with mindless vandalism, looting and violence carried out by feral thugs with no regard for anything including others lives!

It's already kicking off in Manchester apparently, with reports of violence in Thornton Heath earlier this afternoon.

Time for snatch squads to pull out the obvious ringleaders.

No doubt there will be far more despair tomorrow morning.

The way this has been reported from start to finish is causing these problems.

All day i've listened to people blaming this looting on poor and black people.

Kay burley was ridiculous claiming Ealing is a "very nice and mainly white area". What a complete moron.

There is white and other ethnic groups photographed doing this too. Race is completely irrelevant. And nobody knows where these thugs live either.

It is quite clear one of the reasons they are doing it is growing divide between rich and poor and the lack of opportunities for young, less advantaged youths. A lot of it is just mindless vandalism and looting. But if they don't watch their mouths and pointing fingers and singling out massive communities of people it will only get worse.

They need to stop pissing around and get water cannons and rubber bullets on the streets. Round them all up and put them somewhere for processing, shackle them all up and transport them back to the scene and get them to clean up the mess on top of giving them a criminal record but why bother putting them through the justice system wasting time and money. Just give them all this community service if they are caught looting in hoodies and balaclavas.

To be fair the police are in a no win situation. They go in full hog i.e. kick the living day lights out of the scum and its brutality. They stand back and try to disperse they are called soft touches.
Baton rounds and water canon are used in France Germany and many other countries yet the Home Secretary has the stance we police by consent. Well its not working we should police by force.
An ultimatum should be given that anyone in an area where rioting is taking place will be dealt with in a physical way and baton charge the scum, after the police dogs have had ago and the police horses have trampled a few.
But oh no lets talk to community leaders and plead for the law breakers to stay at home while London and other cities burn. Oh what a glorious country we live in the human rights of scum are held above those of hard working people the balance needs to change and now.

I think the police are confused about what people really want from them (our police). Remember the outcry after the G20 conference, and the "police brutality" criticisms after student protests? The public scream that "our police must be accountable" but forums like this are filled with "shoot the rioters on sight!" comments. We have the IPCC and then people say "good, Duggan is dead, one less drug dealer."

I feel sorry for the regular police, they have an impossible job. Politicians cut their resources, and the public send mixed messages to them. They haven't been shown how to use water cannon, even if they did have them!

My view? We need a type of National Guard, a specially trained force that can be called in to quell disorder. Give them the equipment and the expertise to control this criminal scum.

Mike.

Is it really necessary for Sky News to fuel the fire with more talk about Mark Duggan and speculation regarding his death? I really do not think that these thieves are interested in Duggan in the least, but I can't help feeling that their reports and updates on this could not come at a worse time. I really don't think they should be attempting to provide any possible justification for what is going on, especially with reports that make it seem like it could have been some type of racist attack. Perhaps they should allow things to calm down instead of getting soaked in in the usual media excitement? (My own personal opinion, not the opinion of the company.)

..as if by magic, they've just changed their tune!

Had an idea.

Round up looters.

Set up special camp on a disused airfield with arena & accommodation for the looters.

Charge members of public £20 to enter - this will cover costs of the site and help fund rebuilding communities.

The attraction will be to see the looters unrelentingly pounded by water cannon in the arena.

Members of the public will be able to spend £5 per 10 minutes to go on the water cannon.

I'm sure other chargeable but not inhumane punishment/entertainment could be devised. Suggestions on a postcard....

Looters could earn their way out by doing something good/positive - learning a trade/skill/making something to get the victims helped.

Mike.
The police have training facilities of towns that they rehearse rioting in. Full on with petrol bombs charging horses etc. everyone is padded up to the nines though. the police are trained in riots.

I think the police are just outnumbered and not prepared to deal with money grabbers rather than a group of protestors that they can 'kettle' in one area. They are stretched too thinly.

Dar2008 cheers for clarifying. I thought it was done and dusted, case closed so to speak.

Im just popping up to Tottenham to pick up a pair of trainers from JB sports.
