Ok, I think I was blowing off steam - If I had checked with this forum, I would have found this is not the case - but it was the only BMW I have had any dealings with, no other data to go on!

It remains the most best car I have owned - that "planted" steering especially - in many respects.
But more "niggles" in a short space of time than most previous cars!

The 3litre diesel mated with the auto box is a delight. The engine is quiet and refined (for a diesel ). Im getting too old for the M Sport ride though!

Yes the xenons are good.... I know thats your big regret. Retro fit not possible? I think you have up-graded everything else!

I think you have been unlucky. having said that i still dont think the e90 is as well built as the e46 was. We know the paint is thinner, my e90s bumper after 20k miles looked like my e46 after 100000 and the door cards are more prone to creaking. However these arent mechanical gremlins. The 3L engine must be one of the best ever made it is superb.
I wouldnt give up on the bmw. If you want to see dodgy build then yes definitely go for the Merc!

Am seeing this repeated - Merc not quite as good as I thought!

If no further serious problems with my 330d for the next year, I will not only be a very happy man, I may well remain with Mr BMW.

Then more problems with choice - 330i or 330d ??
I think my 6 pot diesel sounds good, but the petrol sounds sooooo sweet.....
As I do low mileage....less than 8k....... But I doubt the petrol auto can be as smooth as my diesel. However is it time for a change????

I found the 35i engine in a Z4 far boomier than the 330d LCI auto coupe I bought .... a different type of car and quicker obviously with a lovely noise - but around town speeds it was far boomier (maybe coupe is differently silenced?) and generally not too pleasant ... all IMO of course

Oh, and FWIW I have come from a Z4M Roadster only a few months ago so was expecting the Z4 35i to be more refined than it was.

The diesel 3L lump is incredibly smooth ...

Oh dear, this is not going to be easy - the 3L diesel is holding its own, for popularity! I cant argue either.

For a big engine, its quiet and smooth

Just echoing what everyone else has said, I think you've just got yourself a bit of a lemon. I've had 3 330d's now and (touch wood) nothing other than daily wear and tear has every gone wrong with them.

C350CDI is less powerful than 330d and does lower MPG's. Looks nicer though.

3 330d's? Wow. Well that has convinced me! Just sheer bad luck.
